To this day, I have refrained from watching ANY of this movie -- even clips -- in large part because my mother was so scarred by it. Demon possession is one of the few things that I find to be truly terrifying and horrific: because I sincerely believe that there are such things as demons. I also cannot stand children speaking in creepy voices, so this film is a trifecta of DO NOT WANT in my books.

I really enjoy reading analyses and critical opinions of this film, and yours was certainly a great read, but... I don't know if I'll ever bring myself to watch this. O_O

I completely understand what you're saying. There are some things that I simply cannot and will not watch (anything involving pets is now pretty much out of the question for me).

I will say that you're missing out. Because holy shit, this movie is fantastic.

But again - I also understand.

(do you know how it ends?)

For me, it's demonic-possession films and torture porn. Someone once recommend Cannibal Holocaust to me and I told them I didn't want their advice on anything else ever again; because there is nothing, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, redeemable about that film.

I think I do? Doesn't von Sydow's priest end up killed -- thrown out of a window?

OK, so you sort of know how it ends. Yes, Max von Sydow gets killed during the exorcism. It's kind of that "old man taking pills at the beginning of the film OK this will not end well" thing.

Ever since I saw Saving Private Ryan in theaters, my capacity to withstand graphic violence plummeted. I really have an extraordinarily low tolerance for violence, ESPECIALLY war violence. I have not yet seen Platoon. I am scared to death to watch Platoon.
