I'm not going to lie, I haven't seen this movie. I'm going to blame this on the fact that I was over seas when it came out. Perhaps I'll make up for that sometime over the summer!
Personally, I actually don't see Transformers as a guilty pleasure at all. Just a damn awesome and fun movie with really neat special effects. Also: Lots of childhood nostalgia. :D
Well, I consider it a "guilty pleasure" because I have to concede that it's not one of the best movies ever made, and it definitely has its faults. Still, AWESOME FUN!
Yeah, Rob is a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE Transformers fanboy - he's seen every series ever, has boxes and boxes of figures, and owns multiple copies of the original Transformers movie. He made me watch it once. I don't know as I've quite forgiven him yet.
Needless to say, I accompanied him to a midnight show for THIS film back in 2007, and we both walked out with a positive experience. He loved it, and it was certainly entertaining for me. It feels a bit long, I think they could have edited some, but it's a surprisingly funny movie, to its credit. Definitely entertaining. I wasn't really expecting to like it, but I did. Heck, my MOM watched it and really liked it! She's seen it multiple times now!
So yes, I agree with many of your points - I had a similar impression of the film upon first seeing it.
Yeah, it definitely drags in places and a lot of the secondary characters aren't really important -- seriously, what is up with the whole Australian chick and Anthony Anderson? Largely pointless! Still, fun!
