MAN OF STEEL

Jun 11, 2013 21:15

71% on Rotten Tomatoes. First shows are at 12:01 a.m. Thursday.

I'm looking forward to it. I hope it's good. Gotta say this, though: When a movie reviewer complains about the science in a Superman film, it'd better be really, really hosed science.

Because, Superman.

Entertainment Weekly didn't care for it, and they're usually one of my favorite critics. Still, the good looks as if it'll outweigh the bad!

I'll probably see it this weekend. Movie Bob is bound to do it and he's hopeful. Since he does more genre and geek films he has a perspective closer to my own.

Right now my big question is whether or not it lays the ground work for the Justice League. If not, they really weren't paying attention to Marvel Studios.

I'm getting fatigue just seeing the film titles. Super This, Iron That, Mega Mighty Boom Boom, Blow Out Yer Eardrums IV, White Dudes In Tights: The Sequel, Fuck Having a Plot: The Final Explosion.

They never film the comics I read. Where's the Beanworld movie? Or Hothead Paisan: Homicidal Lesbian Terrorist? Usagi Yojimbo?

I want to be optimistic. But word of a dour Superman who never forgets he's an alien, and a long fight sequence, has me concerned. The Superman I love smiles. And is less an alien than the epitome of the immigrant success story. And uses his fists as a last resort.

I really don't want to judge all Superman films against the first Chris Reeve film, but I keep remembering that he smiled, and didn't throw a single punch in that one, and was utterly at home in Metropolis. It's going to be hard to not keep thinking about that.

Yes. These guys seem to be losing the thread of what MAKES a Superman story. Everything doesn't need to be dark & gritty.

My roommate and I almost threw popcorn at the screen when the first trailer we saw suggested that Jonathan Kent was telling Clark NOT TO SAVE PEOPLE. The second one makes me hope it was misleading, but...

Yuck. That's like having a Star Trek movie where Khan is played by a white guy. Oh wait.

Thanks for the reminder. I'll go hit fandango and grab a ticket--got it on my review list for buzzymag.

Where have the days gone?
