So many things we celebrate on Geek Pride Day!

First, of course, it's the Glorious 25th of May, for all you Discworld fans.

It's also the 36th anniversary of the release of the original, non-Episode IV Star Wars. We weren't completely unprepared -- technically, Jaws was the first "blockbuster" -- but, besides being the coolest thing most of us ( Read more... )

Also, HMS Pinafore opened on this date in 1878, and in 1961 President Kennedy announced a national project to put a man on the moon.

I'll be carrying a towel today, all right - starting my first shift of the summer as a pool monitor at my condo. (There are worse ways to earn a little extra dough than to spend a gorgeous summer day under a tree by a pool - especially as I just got not-paid for Friday due to the furlough.)

I vividly remember seeing the ads for that upcoming movie in the mid-70s - guys swinging on ropes like in a pirate movie, having sword-fights with lasers - and thinking "Ah, this thing's gonna flop."

We are having our last weekend off before many weekends of kid stuff and shows. Three shows in three weekends even. It's going to be great.
