Great sadness -- one of the legends has fallen. Filmmaker Ray Harryhausen has passed away at the age of 92.

I'm not even going to bother listing his technical accomplishments, or all the filmmakers he inspired; you can read 'em at the Wikipedia link above. What Ray really did was make our dreams visible, right up there on the movie screen. We ( Read more... )

I love Golden Voyage Of Sinbad. It's cheese, but it's magnificent cheese. And the fight with the 6 armed Kali is one of Harryhausen's best.

And I see you got the news just as I was drafting an E-mail.

My favorite Harryhausen film is The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, whose highlights include the duel between Sinbad and a six-armed animate statue of Kali and Tom Baker's performance, balancing ham and gravitas, as the evil wizard Koura; I would also lay serious money that Koura's familiar was the template for the Homunculus as codified by Dungeons & Dragons.

I adore Harryhausen movies. Sinbad colored my youth, because of the very hot weekend when the power was out and my dad too me to a Sinbad film festival. There were about three or four of them all in a row, in an air-conditioned theater.

Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger.
Clash of the Titans. I still love Medusa.

Can't really pick a favorite - I like all of the Sinbad movies. Oh, and Valley of Gwangi with the dinosaurs. Until Jurassic Park came along much later, I think these were my favorite dinosaur depictions.

Oddly enough except for Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger, and Clash of the Titans I haven't seen many of Harryhausen's movies. I always said I'd get around to it one day, I just never did. Looks like I'll be going to Amazon as soon as I have a little extra money.
