Toontrack has released EZdrummer Lite and EZmix 2 Lite for free. (You do have to sign up for a Toontrack account if you don't already have one.) The authorization process is a bit of a pain. Available for both PC and Mac.

And, if you have an iDevice, especially an iPad, you should try Zap Guitar, a free app that lets you "strum" a "guitar". It ( Read more... )

http://www.lilypond.org, always. :-) Why pay hundreds of dollars for Finale when the output from GNU Lilypond is prettier and more-configurable?

Yep. Between that and MuseScore, Finale and the other pricy notations programs can go jump.

I have been using DrumJam and FunkBox on the iPad. Both pay apps, but pretty affordable (5 bucks each I think).

It looks likely that they are both going to feature a bit on the next CD.

Next year were probably going to get another iPad and link them together onstage. I have been looking at a couple of synth programs, that one is definitely on the list. Mostly, I want the mellotron emulator.

I don't know about half of those, but I'll check 'em out. Hokusai is okay for recording, but I don't find it to be anything special. Chordbot, I'm still getting the hang of. ThumbJam and Seline Ultimate... absolutely essential. Seriously, gang, if you get no other music apps for your iWhatever, at least get one of those two (I'd seriously go with ThumbJam, but they're both wonderful).

Audicity Question alverant April 29 2013, 17:38:54 UTC
Not to derail the thread too much but last night I tried Audacity (sp) with my microphone to hear how my voice sounded and get used to talking into it (first step in starting my podcast). I noticed that the blue sound markings in the top channel were a bit above the 0 line and the ones in the bottom channel were below it. Does anyone know why?

Hmmm. Is your input set to Mono? It may only be getting audio on the Left channel. Your computer could also be set to record your basic system sound, which would include both channels but not nearly so much on the right. (It would be taking your mono signal and pumping it over both speakers, but since you're also recording on the left channel it would effectively meter that one twice, so it would show up as louder.

When you figure out what your input source is (and mono is good, for a single-mic vocal track -- saves you .WAV file space, it's only half as large as a stereo track), bring down your Master volume by at least five or six points. You can always make something louder; you can almost never un-loud something.

I tried Mono and moving my mic around. It didn't help, on Mono the audio for the top (only) track had a 0 line above the actual 0 line. When I listen to it, it's not bad, I just can't figure out why they're off center on the screen. I'll try bringing down the master volume a little bit and see if it helps. Also I'd rather keep it stereo for now. I have enough hard drive space.

Is this microphone plugged into a mixer, and the output of the mixer is then going to line in/mic in? I had something similar a long time ago using a mixer. The problem turned out to be that Windows had the Line In input setup as a microphone input instead of Line in, and that puts a constant DC bias on anything coming out of the mixer. Lots of soundcards allow you to reconfigure the ports so anything can have anything jacked into it.

If a mixer is going into the line in on the computer, make certain it is setup as line in and not as microphone or the DC that powers the microphone will be present.

I know this comment is OT but my brain is in a weird place right now. I have a question regarding your Rorshach Love song Tom, and for anyone that would care to answer. Am I the only person who pictured Ann Coulter being the person singing to him? Because the first time I heard that song, that's where my brain went.
