Breaking news this morning: Five dead in Illinois shooting.

ENOUGH!

Enough with the goddamn guns.

Enough enough enough.

I haven't even had my fucking Egg McMuffin yet, and a half-dozen people have been shot.

Y'know what, gun-rights-über-alles folks? You're correct. Guns don't kill people. PEOPLE WITH GUNS KILL PEOPLE. A lot more easily ( Read more... )

enough already, guns, snarl, wtf

I was talking to someone yesterday who was convinced that if we arm everyone -- including children -- things like this would never happen. Apparently more guns is the answer to too much gun violence. IDEK

Similarly, the answer to the failure to stop illegal drugs is to give everybody drugs. Maybe if we're all stoned, we won't care about drugs.

Besides, laws have not stopped all drug crime. Criminals can still get drugs. Therefore, ANY laws designed to make it harder to get drugs are just pointless.

I think it says something about guns that my first thought about Boston was "Wait--100 wounded but only 2 dead? That's a very odd ratio. Oh, it was a *bomb.* I guess that explains it."

Or maybe it says something about me, that the horror reflex is kind of burning out. I should be appalled but I can't muster the energy.

A friend of mine went on a tear about how "we're all upset over Newtown and Boston when horrible/worse things happen around the world EVERYDAY and we don't care about those people" etc etc. I opined that if we truly felt every tragedy the way they deserve, we would all be stark raving mad. It's a self-defense mechanism to preserve sanity in a world going crazy.

I completely agree. There have always been more tragedies in the world than we can cope with, but it is only comparatively recently we've been able to hear about every. single. one. I can barely cope with the tragedies that impact my extended acquaintance (in other words, my RL and online friends/family and their friends/family.) If I tried to care about everyone in the world, I'd never stop crying.

There's an interesting discussion of an alternative explanation of this from a few years ago.

What do monkeys have to do with war, oppression, crime, racism and even e-mail spam? You'll see that all of the random ass-headed cruelty of the world will suddenly make perfect sense once we go Inside the Monkeysphere....

More guns mean more gun violence. The CDC proved it and the NRA had the report shut down.
