Farewell, Robin Sachs

Sadness. Actor Robin Sachs has passed away at the age of 61.

Mr. Sachs had a long and distinguished career (Hammer films and Dynasty: The Reunion notwithstanding), but we know him from a whole bunch of genre work -- the evil General Sarris in Galaxy Quest, Na'Tok and a few other roles in Babylon 5, Giles' nemesis Ethan Rayne in Buffy the Vampire ( Read more... )

Oh noez! I knew about his work in Buffy (Whedonesque posted their announcement yesterday afternoon) but I didn't know about his work in Galaxy Quest or B5.

Ten years ago - where has the time gone? - our friend stakebait organized a Buffycon. It was not easy at all for her to do, but somehow she managed to get Mr. Sachs for the event. He was quite the gracious guest, and seemed to have a ball breaking into the Bard for us at one panel. I am not sure he really knew what to make of us crazy fans, but he seemed to take it all in stride.

It was also weird to learn that he was Sarris under a lot of makeup and not through 90s CGI. And unfortunately, I didn't realize that he made an appearance on the early 90s UPN show Nowhere Man, which isn't exactly the sort of thing anyone remembers, but it would have been nice to say "hey, I remember you from that, too."

It's going to be really strange, and maybe even creepy, when I read the next issue of Angel and Faith. At the moment, Ethan's corpse is up and about. Wouldn't be surprised if maybe Dark Horse pushes back the release date a bit.

Man, he is way too young to be dead. For the record, he did Hotspur's speech at Buffycon and held the entire room in his hand.

Requiescat, Mr. Sachs.
