Gaw-awll-lee, Surprise Surprise Surprise, ShaZAM! and Other Obvious Declarations

I liked Jim Nabors when I was a kid -- watched him on The Andy Griffith Show, and then when he spun off into the equally popular Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. Then one day we got to hear him sing, and whoa. Bumpkin face, opera voice.

Not that I'd thought much about him in the ensuing decades. He'd kinda dropped off my radar. Well, that certainly Read more... )

Well, good for him. And good for the people that have fought for and enabled marriage rights, so that no-one is excluded from this basic human joy.

Though my wiseass impulse is to say "Goll-lle!", which I seem to remember was his character's signature line.

Every time I hear his name, I remember a number from one of his long-ago Christmas specials. To "The 12 Days of Christmas," all the guests were complaining about poorly-conceived gifts they'd received. Nabors had the punchline, 6'+ of basso profundo & sad hound dog eyes ending each verse with "And a sweat-e-er down to my knees."

Good to know he's well & happy.

He's not married, he's civilly unionized. At least as far as Hawaii is concerned.

Let's hope that that changes while Jim and Stan are around to see it.

They actually went to a state (Washington, where it's just recently been legalized) that allows marriage & got married there, Hawaii recognizes it reciprocally as a civil union.

I'd guess it'll be a full marriage in Hawaii in the next 2 years.

Goes to show how clueless I was about him. Good for him and his husband both.

I never watched Gomer Pyle, but here's Nabors's surprisingly-good rendition of O Holy Night:

Nabors is well-known for his opera- (or near-opera-)quality voice. I hope he sang at the wedding.
