Files That Last

Woulda hyped this sooner, if I'd seen it. madfilkentist is trying to fund a book called Files That Last, evangelizing and explaining digital preservation to a wide range of computer users. Thing is, it's only got about 8 hours left. If you like the idea, won't you help?

Gary McGath's project is a worthy one, as I, and many other people who have lost some of our song lyric files forever, can attest.

I backed it and boosted. I hope it will make its goal, because I think it fills a need.

Agreed. (That is why I signal boosted it again last night on facebook.) As for lost song lyric files, do you at least have some of the songs on tape somewhere? Or printout of the songs?

I know I will likely find recordings of you (and most of the filk community) as I go thru recordings in the collections I have on hand to convert for people. (Or once I start doing more conversions from Spencer's archives to hard drive from tape.)

I supported it and just checked back. It's been funded by over $200 past the limit.

I just came across this. Thanks very much for your help! Several of the visits to the Kickstarter site had referrers from here.

I've just declared the first draft finished today.
