Disney to buy LucasFilm.

ETA: Fascinating speculation by Alyssa Rosenberg.

To be fair, they've been rather hands-off with Marvel, Marvel had to create their own film-branch for the current set of movies. And given what came out of Marvel, I'm willing to give Star Wars another chance with new leadership.

THANK GOD.

No one wants LUCAS making another Star Wars film, do they? (My theory is that someone at Disney decided it's long past time for someone to gently take the remote out of George's hand.)

Hopefully they will make Eps 7, 8 and 9 either running off of 4, 5 and 6 or based on the (fan-tested, canon) Star Wars novels about the later generations, and we can all just pretend 1, 2 and 3 don't exist.

Pardon me, but are you naive or just dumb? There isn't anything Lucas can fuck up that Disney can't fuck up worse, and on top of that, they're liable to start suing anyone and everyone who has ever made or will make a Star Wars-themed parody video, fan fiction, costume, filk song, comic strip, t-shirt, margin doodle...

Disney practically epitomizes the worst possible corporate behaviour for an entertainment company ever -- and they make shitty product to boot, have for several decades now. Not to mention that if this kind of acquisition happened in any other industry, people would be at least using the word "antitrust" somewhere. And you think it's a good thing they just bought Lucasfilm? Oy vai iz mir...

AHEM.

You can disagree, and we can discuss your valid points, but kindly do not call anyone on here "dumb". Especially not someone like Vixy.

Thanks.

And now, to your point: filkertom October 31 2012, 00:37:23 UTC
The corporate aspects of Disney, as well as how they can screw something up creatively, are well known. Equally well known are how good they can be, and I can rattle off as many examples of the good as you can of the bad, up to and including whatever genius at Disney/Marvel said, "Let's get Joss Whedon on board."

As with The Muppets, Disney has been doing a lot with the Star Wars properties over the past decade, including the wildly popular Star Wars Fan Days at Walt Disney World's Hollywood Studios. I'm not too worried about product; at the very least, someone besides George Lucas will be around to occasionally say, "Um, no."

This cannot end well.

I doubt it can end much worse than Padme dying of a broken heart and Darth Vader's "Noooo!" yell.

I swear, that is one of the greatest laugh-out-loud moments in all of film. The entire shot is composed badly, it's trying so hard to remind you of Frankenstein films, and it's simply over the top. It's just so dumb.

I burst out laughing in the theater during that scene, and I was hardly alone.

I used to be a huge Star Wars fan (I saw the original Star Wars 42 times). Episodes I-III though, were so bad I have a hard time watching the originals.

I'm willing to give Episode VII a shot though. As I mentioned on a friends journal, Disney is good at two things: making money, and being entertaining. The Avengers was the first movie I've seen in theaters more than once, in about a 7 years.

I'm optimistic. They were hands off Marvel and Muppets. With luck they will treat Star Wars the same and maybe even make episode 7-9. The property needs a new vision.

On a side note in the PnP superhero campaign I'm in my character is a bit of a sci-fi geek and the team is with Disney (long story). My character also has a magic energy sword he can make like any melee weapon and can change his outfit at will. And he has some wind powers. Jedi anyone?

Was once in a GURPS game where we played Disney black ops, raiding Chinese factories that made fake Micky's, derailing bad porn parodies of Mary Poppins, sabotaging unauthorized grade school plays of Beauty and the Beast, disrupting little girl's princess birthday parties. Yeah, we were hard core badasses ;-)
