The Pink Badge Of Cowardice

If you haven't already heard, the Susan G. Komen For The Cure foundation has cut ties to Planned ParenthoodTheir stated excuse is that they don't want to be associated with an organization under Congressional investigation. Of course, the reason Planned Parenthood is under Congressional investigation is that Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL) wants to stop ( Read more... )

That's their smokescreen. In reality, as we learn from ABL:

Turns out that Komen’s new Vice-President of Public Policy, Karen Handel, is a Forced Birther, and even ran for governor of Georgia on a platform of defunding Planned Parenthood. Thus, it seems that Komen for the Cure, the purpose of which is to help women, has been taken hostage by Karen Handel and her right-wing Forced Birth views which undermine women and women’s reproductive choices. In her own words, “Since I am pro-life [anti-choice] I do not support the mission of Planned Parenthood.”

Tell me again why this organization gave such a narrowminded, anti-woman person their Vice-Presidency? Surprise me and say it isn't because she's "a prominent woman", or that "she brought in serious money for the organization."

You can bet that any dime that I'd even considered for SGKftC is now doubled, and headed for PP.

I've already emailed a message to the Susan G. Komen Foundation that the money I would have been donating to them will go to Planned Parenthood instead. Donating to Planned Parenthood and sending a thank-you card to Komen is even better.

Why is an anti-woman person the VP of the Susan G. Komen Foundation? Could it be that the Foundation has grown large and rich enough to lost sight of its original purpose and now exists to accrue wealth and influence for their own sake?

I don't know about the accumulation of wealth, but I've been seeing 17% as the amount of collected moneys that actually go to research from SGKftC. That's awful, and I'd have ended any donation on that basis alone.

Eesh. Yeah, I don't support charities that exist pretty much solely to raise money.

I actually have only donated to Komen when a friend solicits donations for Race for the Cure. If I get any such requests in future, I'll reply, "Not so long as they put ideology over actually providing cancer screenings, but I'll make a donation in your name to Planned Parenthood."

I wonder if the right wing will make a fake video to destroy Planned Parenthood like they did with ACORN.

You have the tense and number wrong. They already have made fake videos to smear Planned Parenthood.

O'Keefe made one, but so far all it's done is provide a little bit of cover for folks like the Repub rep who's "investigating" PP.

Their video had someone pretending to be a sex trafficer wanting to arrange for cheap abortions for his "girls" who are impregnated.

They went to several PP offices around the country. Every last one of them told him they wouldn't do anything for him and asked him to leave, and most reported him to the authorities.

They made a heavily edited video anyway, showing people saying apparently incriminating things out of context. It's a Republican thing. It's what they do.

What horrifies me is that this smears dirt on a cause that has been having a renaissance these last few years and could set breast cancer research back by bad association.

I can only hope that people will see the glaring difference between 'Komen has decided not to support women's reproductive health' and 'people who support breast cancer research don't believe in abortion'.

Considering Ms. Handel's actual title, I'd be tempted to simply misspell it.

"No, I didn't forget the 'l' in 'public,' I deliberately left it out."

And, in more constructive commentary, a list of charities focusing on breast cancer research. I'm not sure how much stock to put in the ratings on the page, but having the names will help direct money towards a cure without handing money to SGK.
