I love watching the shot from the main tank as the shuttle pulls away.

So.

Cool.

That is just a mind bogglingly cool shot, isn't it ?

Have you seen any of the stuff shot from the SRB's ? The footage from the aft camera on the SRB's is incredible too. I have a very good theoretical understanding of what 3G's is. I even know what a 60 degree bank turn feels like. But seeing the Orbiter and tank blasting away like the SRB is suddenly sitting still is amazing.

It's a mind-bogglingy *scary* shot... although once the Shuttle is actually away from the tank, it's safe... until re-entry, that is.

Nevermind what time of year it is.

And I just have to say that, for the record? Despite Road Runner being a childhood hero of mine, and despite the fact that, well, Wile E. had it coming.... Mister MEEP MEEP! is being a real jerk right there.

Reminds me of that picture of the bomb squad, the definition of an s.o.b...

It's only scary if it doesn't work... :)

Actually the scary separation is the SRB separation. That's all still under power and there's still plenty of fuel in the tank. The empty is relatively safe and has a real similar state vector to the orbiter.

And as far as the icon - I always liked Wile E. way more than the damn bird. It's there for him, not the bird.

the whole damn procedure is scary, frankly. A craft that manifestly delicate under those kind of forces and with the kind of unpredictable behaviour we've seen over the last 21 years... especially in cold weather... (oh, *that's* interesting. Today Pad 39A was one of the warmest places in Florida, 86F.... the irony is not lost...)

As opposed to being able to just reach up and turn the damn thing *off* when you have a problem like, say, uncommanded roll... nevermind the whole re-entry non-issue... shuttlecock the wing and sit there and look stupid at it.....

This one was really cool the way the sun came out as the shuttle pulled away. Beautiful. Sometimes the positions are just right. (goes off singing "as we watch all the spaceships that take off and land"

Me neither. The coverage is so much different from when I was growing up
