You know, I have to tell you how ridiculously gleeful this makes me. We've watched the first season of the anime, and my BB has read some of the reviews of the live action movies - they've all been very upset with the changes made to the story, and to what they say are horrible CGI and acting choices. And I've been "No, I really want to see these, because they'll be gloriously bad!"
The anime manages (I think by virtue of being 2D, which means one is not constantly subconsciously saying, 'Oh, this is So Very Not Real!' because of course it's so obviously unreal, and that's a long parenthesis to create) to be more about PTSD, the horrors of war, and the fear of something that really IS out to get you for no apparent reason, than just a weird horror show. The horror is there, in spades, but the focus on the fear of young people who think they can handle the fight, and realizing that they can't ... that's pretty deep for anime.
