[Walter glances over in the process of levitating a piece of cut aluminum to the top of the roof. It looks fairly effortless, as he's watching a black sphere carry the metal upward from his spot on the ground.
After a moment of tense indecision (humans may not be Orerines, but they're still not his kind), he nods in greeting.]
[He frowns at the offer, gesturing to the guy's bow.] You were here for training, weren't you? [Not that he doesn't sorta appreciate the offer, but he doesn't anyone going out of their way to assist him.]
[Fenimore doesn't normally pass by the barracks. But hammering aluminum siding is probably not the quietest thing ever and she wanders over when she sees that it's him.
When she gets closer, she stops and looks up at him, hands in her pockets.] You never showed this kind of enthusiasm for building back home. [Because clearly two weeks of somewhat minimal contact is enough to get an idea of what Walter's interests are.]
[Since Fenimore remains probably the sole person in Luceti to not finish reading the guide and has not seen anything get restored before, she's assuming this to be a sort of "if I don't, who will?" kind of comment.]
[Around midday, Walter should spot Shirley coming down the path, a little basket on her arm; what's in it might be hard for him to see, but there are a few sandwiches, two apples, and a small drinking of jug of lemonade inside. When she saw Walter leave the house with his tools, she figured that it would be to the barracks; she also thought that he might appreciate some lunch, when the time came for it.
So, when Shirley left for class, she remembered to bring enough lunch with her for two: her plan is to leave most of it with Walter, and eat her own on the way back to school. When she gets closer to the barracks, she'll wave at Walter, wherever he is.]
[Fortunately, Walter is working on some of the aluminum siding on the ground, so he doesn't notice Shirley until she's much closer; if he had noticed her sooner, you can bet that he would try to walk over to spare her a few extra steps.]
Merines. [He wavers between putting down the hammer or not before deciding it would be the best thing to do before he waves back and throws it off in some random direction.]I'm just cutting more of this metal. ...You're off to school already?
[Shirley can only watch, mouth agape, as the hammer flies in an unstoppable trajectory that busts through a window of the barracks like Phoenix Wright through false testimony. She shakes her head at his question.] No... it's just lunchtime. Have you eaten yet?
I have not, no. [He blinks when he realizes what this basket must be.] You came out here to bring this, Merines? [Better stop him before he starts apologizing or something silly.]

I built this building, so I might as well maintain it. The Malnosso definitely won't.

Do you even use it, though?

I don't. But other people do.
[People he doesn't even know or care about, but hey, he'll just ... not mention that.]

[Time tends to slip away when you're working.]
