eh, i think it's mostly pms. wikipedia made me cry yesterday, while I was reading about Project Management, and then while I was reading about Brownian Motion, and I forget what else but none of them were particularly emotional topics
( ... )
No, it's not all better with Sunny, but it's on the road. Sunny is smart enough not to think this is happily ever after, and that he's going to have to guide Robert to the same realization. It could be "ever after," for them, but it won't be easy.
JD wasn't looking for a relationship, but for just what he initially thought he had--a regular, familiar sex partner. His emotional needs are met by Cammie, so all he wants is sex, and Robert fills that need better than anyone else has. There are a couple of moments in the story where Robert is almost overwhelmed with emotion, and JD says the exact right (wrong) thing in keeping with his view of what it is, undercutting Robert's developing feelings. At first he isn't doing it intentionally, but at the end he is. But he can't stick it out, and thus the "sorry."
They could have had more than sex, if there had been no Cammie.
Here via Princess of G's rec . . . . A beautifully rounded story, with its unfolding of Robert's apprehensions, insights, logical mis-assumptions, and own issues over the course of time. A great original character whose insights and skills are a limited subset of JD's (even to being able to fly but not appreciating it) people-reading and threat assessment strengths. Great choice of viewpoint.
Robert's recognition of JD's kindness, the primacy of JD and Cammie's bond, the home they have made for themselves, and his own levels of discomfort with what fitting in there would entail are stellar. And then Sunny reemerges with new meaning given to Robert's knowing and using his real name. Very satisfying--by itself but especially in the context of the Cammieverse.
That Robert's insights and skills are a limited subset of JD's was something I realized in the second draft. I have some vague hope that ivorygates will tell the other side of this story,
I'm glad you found it satisfying. It's intimidating to jump into this 'verse.
