Sounds like joyless birding - how dreary! May I suggest The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature, and Fowl Obsession? I was in the wrong mood but Hope, who has more tolerance for human nature than I, loved it.

It was interesting in many places, but an abysmal failure from thr bird (even as metaphor) standpoint. Yay for the library, because I would have been cranky if I had bought it, but this way I just read it on its own merit.

I have added your suggestion to my list. It sounds really familiar, but I think the really great "big year" book I read followed a single birder (and it was probably 10 years ago.)
