Title: Don't Go Wasting Your Emotions (2/?)
Rating: PG-13 for swearing and sexual content
Pairing and Characters: Kirk/McCoy, Chris Pike, Spock, Nyota, Gary Mitchell, and Uncle Frank
Word Count: 1,996
Summary: Jim is in high school - on a different planet. He's a delinquent, inconsiderate of the other's feelings, and breaks the law on a semi- daily basis. The planet he lives on is almost identical to Earth but is not uninhabited. The humanoid aliens that live there are not hostile, at the time the story takes place, but the humans and aliens are segregated because of past confusion and war.
Disclaimer: I don't own any of the characters. All the events that occur are purely fictional.
It’s not often that my dad calls me in to help out with a patient but considering that that they came by in the middle of the night screaming bloody murder- well, I guess I was the only available nurse.
I’d say I was doing fine until I slipped on the wooden floor because I was running around in my socks. Luckily though, the Violet that brought the patient in caught me before we’d have to up the patient count to 2 as early as 5 in the morning.
“Alright. Looks like we’re good here.” My dad sighed as he removed his gloves, “Violet, if you need a ride I can take you home. Leonard can watch the patient.” He gave me a pointed look.
I nodded reassuring the Violet.
“Okay,” He replied hesitantly, his dark eyes shifting to look at the patient.
“Let’s head out then.”
As soon as I heard the door close I turned to a nearby chair and pulled it up to the patient’s bed. I didn’t get much sleep last night so I leaned back and closed my eyes.
“Hey.”
I snapped by head back up thinking my dad caught me sleeping on the job but to instead come colliding with the head of the patient.
“Ouch dammit!” I held a hand to my forehead, “ You’re supposed to be asleep.”
“Yeah well, you’re supposed to make sure the patient isn’t in pain!”
I looked up at the tone of his voice only to find mirthful blue eyes staring at me.
“Hey… I know you.” My scowl deepened, “ You’re the kid that made fun of my name.”
“Yep.” He said smirking, “Mine’s Jim by the way.”
“You’re awfully confident making fun of someone that could hypo you at any given moment.” I grumbled.
For a split second, there was a little fear in his eyes before it was replaced with another cocky stare. I dare you.
I furrowed my eyebrows and considered it.
But then his eyelids started to droop and I leaned back watching him fight the urge to sleep before it took him 30 seconds later.
I followed soon after.

I was in the same room but I couldn’t move. It was like someone was pinning me down but I couldn’t look down to see. The patient was still asleep and oblivious.
I tried my best to move and when that didn’t work I thought I heard my dad come back home.
I yelled but no sound came out.
Daddy
I tried getting up again but my head seemed too heavy.
I heard him talking to someone.
Why couldn’t he hear me?
There are other people in the room now. They shouldn’t be here.
They’re invading my privacy.
Are they laughing?
They’re talking about hurting me.
Daddy Please
Before they move.
“Leonard, wake up, son.”
I stood up straight on the chair and shook my head. Damn it. The hell kind of a nap was that?
“The patient left. You were supposed to look after him.” He fixed me with a stern look.
“Oh.”

Jim’s POV
“It’s not like it’s wrong. He’s very young. There’s barely any difference between us.”
“How is it going to work out though? What about your parents?”
“Well, obviously I can’t tell them. You’re the only one who knows, Christine.”
“I know. Don’t worry, Uhura, you’re secret’s safe with me.”
I put a hand to Gary’s mouth to keep him from making a sound.
“Thanks. I needed to tell someone. And I trust you.”
Unbelievable. Un-fucking-believable. Well, actually, maybe a little believable. I pulled my hand away from Gary’s mouth and wiped it on my jeans. They finally walked away.
“Did you hear that Gary!?”
“Yes!” His eyes were wider than I’d ever seen them before.
“I mean, I wouldn’t put it past U-whore-a, but Spock!” I laughed and shook my head,” I thought he was model teacher of the year or something.”
“Shhh! Anyone could hear!” He looked back and forth the hallway.
I shrugged figuring I wouldn’t lose anything if anyone did.
“Come on, let’s go get lunch.”
*****
Leonard’s POV
I didn’t mind that I was in a new school, what I did mind was that I now have no one to have lunch with.
I slid my tray to the cashier and offered the credit chip my dad gave me this morning.
“Have a good day.”
“Thanks.” I replied a little taken aback. Freshers greetings most likely. I picked up my tray and made my way outside to eat. Might as well enjoy the sun if I was going to be alone.
“Hey you there!”
I blinked and put a hand up in front of my face to cover the sun to see a blonde girl wave at me.
“Come sit with us!”
I nodded and made my way towards the table where the blonde girl and her friend were sitting.
“I’m Christine.” She smiled at me and I figured her eyes were almost as blue as Jim’s, “And this is Uhura.”
I turned to Uhura and was met with a warm smile, “ It’s nice to have new blood. “
“It’s nice to meet new people.”
“Great!” Christine replied jumping up a little on her chair, “ So you’re from Earth huh?”
Uhura leaned in at that, probably as interested to hear about it too.
“Yes. Born and raised.” Eating alone might have been a better option. I squirmed in my seat before picking up my sandwich.
“So why’d you move?”
“My dad wanted a change.”
Uhura laughed.
“Typical Earth sexism. And your mother didn’t have a say I suppose?”
“She wasn’t around to be asked.” Suddenly, all I wanted to do was leave the table. New friends be damned.
“Sorry! I didn’t reali---“
“AAAAHHHHH. WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU!”
We all jumped in our seats at the yelling.
“Come on, Gary. Don’t be a baby.” That was Jim. He walked up to the boy with really curly hair and patted his head in an effort to placate him. Gary didn’t take it well and shook his head away from Jim.
“You’re an ass.” He continued to shake his head but more vigorously. It was only when I focused that I noticed that he was shaking quite large insects from his hair.
The girls I was sitting with must have noticed at the same time because Uhura started to scrunch up her nose and Christine had begun a quiet chorus of “ew ew ew ew”.
After a few more seconds Gary seemed confident that there were no more creepy crawlies in his hair and stopped shaking his head. He picked up an empty juice box and threw it at Jim before making a dramatic exit. Jim just caught it and laughed.
“I don’t understand what his problem is.” Christine seemed really upset about the happenings.
“Please. It’s Kirk. He was probably born a problem.” Uhura replied dismissively picking up her spoon to finish the yogurt she bought.
Christine gave me a small smile and picked up her spoon too.
At least, I think the goo they’re eating is yogurt. Do they eat yogurt here? It’s sometimes hard to remember that I’m not on Earth anymore. I went to pick up the apple I got only to have my hand grab the air. The heck?
“Thanks, Leonard.” I heard a crunch and looked up to see Jim biting into my apple.
“Have you regressed to stealing food, Jim?” Uhura asked smartly.
“Nice to see you too, U-whore-a.” He replied as he sat down on the bench next to me and bumped his shoulder with mine. “Leonard.”
“Jim” I nodded in reply only to get a sincere smile in return.
“So how’s it going, Christine?” he asked taking another bite of the apple and facing her.
“It’s fine.” She said, happy persona suddenly cold.
“You still wanna be a nurse? Leonard’s dad is a doctor. Maybe you can ask if you can do some shadowing.”
Christine looked up at that, clearly interested.
“I could ask my dad for you if you like.” I spoke up.
“That would be great. Thanks!” She smiled, excited at the prospect.
The table was suddenly quiet again and this time I didn’t even have food to eat. So I just sat there squinting at the sun while Jim’s knee constantly knocked onto mine. Does he ever keep still?
“Hey, Jim!” A tall figure blocked the sun.
“Scotty!” Jim stood up and greeted the tall guy with long red hair. He looked like a rocker from the 21st century.
“Uhura, Christine.” He nodded at them and received warm welcomes in return. Then he looked at me and tilted his head. “I don’t think I know you…”
“He’s Leonard,” Jim replied for me sitting back down next to me, “from Earth.”
“Well hello there, Earthling!” He put out a hand for me to shake and I did so awkwardly from my position on the bench.
“Hello.”
“Yeah, he doesn’t talk much.” Jim started talking again.
“Not to worry, Jimbo. There’s a simple cure for a twist of the tongues and that would be my classic part-ayyy. ” Scotty began, while he sat himself on the table,” And I happen to be throwing one this very weekend." Then he turned to me specifically and added, “ They’re not classy at all really. In fact, they’re probably the opposite of classy.” Then he lowered his voice and added again, this time facing Jim, “And there’s a great chance of an after party, if you know what I mean.”
Uhura and Christine seemed excited about the party although Uhura was trying to downplay her excitement. Christine on the other hand started to list her options of clothing.
“You sure you got the right guys this time, Scotty?” Jim replied a hushed tone, “the last ones really messed me up.”
“Don’t worry, the last ones were only for a temporary fix. I got the old guys back since they’re back from their trip. Not that kind of trip. Anyway, these guys can definitely be trusted.”
Scotty edged closer to us, turning his back on the girls, and faced me.
“You know what we’re talking about, kid?” Scotty asked.
I could feel Jim looking at me too, probably curious if I knew or not.
I wasn’t sure. I mean, I am from Earth after all. I’ve heard of the stories about the kids on Porphyreus running around with the aliens. But what was just rumor and what was real? Is there really such a thing as a transworlder? Are Jim and Scotty examples? What about Uhura and Christine?
There was a reason why the two species were segregated and only dealt with each other in regards to business.
And it wasn’t just fun and games either. There are millions of military bases on this planet and 80% of the kids who live here have parents who are in the military field. They take the segregation seriously and have more than enough eyes to make sure it is being carried out. And yet, there was always someone in school who claimed that they had a cousin there. That their cousin knew some people who changed back and forth -that they found a way to temporarily change their gene expression for the night and managed to sneak past security.
I didn’t know how they did that. I sort of have an inkling now. Drugs.
Suddenly, a lot made sense. Especially Jim’s sudden bad side effect to “sleeping pills” that night he was admitted.
Instead of asking what I wanted to know, how these drugs work, I ended up asking what every stupid “Earthling” asked after hearing that story,
“Have you ever had sex with a Violet?”
Scotty and Jim looked back unblinkingly. Jim broke it first by laughing first and Scotty joined with rumbustious laughter. I felt my face heat up.
Jim slapped my back, “Plenty of time for that later.”
