Been a Long Day Why This Must Be Read: Here's a relatively new piece from Lokei, who has a marvelous grasp of the Jack and Daniel friendship. In Been a Long Day, Lokei gives us a quiet, lovely scene of Jack and Daniel sitting over a chessboard, post-The Fifth Race. There's the usual verbal shorthand between these two, and acknowledgment and acceptance of faith and trust and friendship. It's a short, quick read, but it's sure to leave you smiling!
"I used to wonder,' Jack said, and then cut himself off abruptly.
Daniel sipped his coffee, moved his bishop forward three spaces and 'hmmm'd' interrogatively. He knew better than to look at Jack while the other tried to sort out his thoughts. Chess, post-stressful situation, was more about giving them an excuse to not look at each other as they talked their way through things than it was about the game.
