It was in the late winter that trees, now stark bare and poor in their sleepy state, cracked open knot eyes to stare around the dull scene; a mixture of black, brown and white. The autumn winds had ripped their lush green clothing from them and now they stood only graced by the inches of heavy snow piled on their numerous arms.

The day was still for the most part, except when a comrade titled in exhaustion and with a quiet and wet crunch its new white shawl slipped to the covered ground, or maybe when a bird took off and left in its wake a mixture of snow drops and long dead leaves to fall. The only noises that sounded were that of the few cars trolling along the carriageway or a bird calling out; a cry for help in a blank world.

It wasn't often that it snowed in the wood. The winters would be cold, wet and windy. The trees and bushes well knew that in its sister gathering over the A45 children of all ages trudged through the seven inch falls to sled and toboggan their way down the hills, delighted with the landscapes new crisp white coat, yet for some reason they did not envy the others of their chance to watch humans enjoy themselves and carve footprints into the once flawless expanse. They were perfectly sound left alone to gape their never closing mouths at the sight and to delight in what little and peaceful company they were given by a dog walker or ambling photographer.

In fact they were almost glad that the bitter cold nights had driven away the noisy groups of rule-breaking teens who took to snapping their arms for fires and littering the ground with empty cheap beer cans. But the chill didn't manage to thrust all of the couples away. There must have been about three in total who wound their ways through the paths holding gloved hands.
They all seemed familiar; the plump middle aged women cuddling into her boyfriend of two years - they were both divorcees, the young teenage couple who liked to wear jeans two sizes two small and shared brightly coloured plastic jewellery hung about their necks and a couple that last visited not two months ago with a contrast in colour and personality.

Sasuke and Naruto.

But there was something different from their earlier autumn trip. Then they had not only been less wrapped up, whereas now they wore skiing jackets and trousers and layers of thermals beneath, but distant as well. Within the wrinkled and aged bark of the trees were memories of not meeting each others eyes, hopes and dreams both shared but not spoken and a tension they acknowledged but took full responsibility for.

Maybe that was why, as they watched silently the gloved hands brushing and the eyes not caring to meet, one tree took it upon themselves to intervene in their peace by hurtling a large sum of snow at their heads.

It hit with a wonderful sound echoed by choruses of laughter and groaning and unmanly squeals as snow slid down a tanned back. Naruto in his odd assortment of blue ski wear and mass of chequered scarves, laughed heartily as he brushed himself off, a smile fixed widely on his friends face, cheeks and nose tinged a shiny pink. The sounds echoed over an empty golf course and through the mass of damp wood. And then it faded, a gloved finger left to scratch at the back of a damp head of blonde hair as eyes lingered on each other.

“...You okay?”

It was not the first time the woodland had heard Sasuke speak, but perhaps surrounded by the vast emptiness of human life the voice seemed to hold more emotion than usual. Snow slipped easily off a branch to the south.

“Yeah...” With the breathy reply came forth a puff of steam; dragons smoke that disappeared as quick as it came. The arm that stretched angularly against the waterproofed fabric came calmly down to hand at a cold side as clear blue eyes softened. Deep brown matched.

The wood, if it could have, would have held its breath in excitement as all too quickly to truly see a face drove forwards to land a chapped kiss securely on damp and bitten lips.

Perhaps, Sasuke thought as they broke away and returned to walking, hands tangling together, Naruto wasn't as untouchable as he first thought.
