So... seems LJ is trying to pull a fast one.

Quoted from Brad's journal:

Yayy another eager participant :) I think that everything they are doing to us is a load of crap. Also, do you have a plus account? apparently they are now using the ads to send our information (birthdate, interests, location, first public entry) to companies and the like. It's very messed up and I am thinking of moving to IJ.

I do not have a plus... I stuck with basic cuz I didn't want to deal with all the ads. Now I'm glad I did!! That's terrible. I didn't hear about that.

Very true. I'm in a bit of a pickle right now. I had a paid account for a year and got used to all the features. But now I have no desire to renew it. When the paid account was up they reverted my journal back to a plus account. Although that's annoying, it means that I can keep a decent amount of icons and also the layout which I customized for myself and wouldn't be available at all if I switched to basic (it's The Boxer, with some changes). Also I have the ads blocked, so I don't see them at all. Therefore, I don't really want to change back to basic, haha. I figure if the ads (even though I can't see them, they are still there) have collected my info already, what's the point. I would change back as a matter of principle, but I want my layout and icons. Ugh I am such a loser.
