It was true, Hermione Granger was very rarely ever seen without a book in hand and this was no exception. Usually such texts were for entertainment, but these days she had to remind herself that she was a student again and she wanted to do her very best ( ... )

"I believe it is afternoon, Miss Granger," Severus drawled sardonically as he took one of the chairs near the fire. Oh, yes - contrary just to be contrary! Severus was in a fine mood, indeed.

"My students have been particularly unruly already today in lessons, as though victory on a Quidditch pitch somehow justifies idiocy in my classroom - I need not tell you I am rapidly erasing that belief from their minds. My detention roster continues to fill," he said conversationally as he snapped open the newspaper and skimmed through the day's headlines.

"Minerva tells me you will be taking your N.E.W.T. exams in the spring. Your revision is going well, I trust."

Bickering over the Quidditch game would not be had with Miss Granger - he wasn't certain if she had even watched the game, but he would be very surprised if she gave it an hour's thought after the game was over.

Katie Bell had avoided Snape for the most part. She was planning drills for that night as she settled into her usual seat at the staff tables far end, far far away from Severus Snape. She looked to be deep in thought, still wearing the sling. She had to think about all of this, if it was all worth it, fighting with Severus, fighting with her students daily, fighting with herself over right and wrong.

She shoved her hair out of her face before she moved to get herself something to eat, settling for a salad and half a sandwich, it was easy to eat with one hand and let her brood without having to think too much about the eating part of it. She had been quiet and calm since the game on Saturday. She had done her best to encourage her players, even though her heart wasn't really into it. It didn't matter as long as they thought it was.

In truth, Severus hadn't noticed Coach Bell when he first entered the Staff room. She had done a passable job of concealing herself, and as she had not been at the staff-table in the Great Hall when he had eaten his lunch, he thought she was sulking and drowning her sorrows somewhere about the castle.

Only when she moved to summon her meal to the staff room did he notice her, and then he only glanced at her in a dilatory fashion over the edge of his paper.

"Ah, Coach Bell. There you are. I was wondering - will you be establishing a Defence among the team sometime over the course of your career here, or are we merely focusing on scoring with the quaffle?" he asked lazily, with a characteristic sarcastic sneer upon his lips. "When will Seeker try-outs begin? A Quidditch team ought to have a Seeker, I do hope you will be providing one for Slytherin at some point."

This, of course, was actually rather mild for what he might have said in regards to the abysmal performance of 'his' team on the field on Saturday, but his pleasant ( ... )

"Bugger off, Severus." she snapped, shooting a glare at him, warning him not to take on this arguement. She would accomidate him, but the man knew nothing about how hard those kids had worked to do as well as they had done. There were still things to work on, but their next game wasn't under January.

Perhaps she was looking for an arguement, specifically calling him by his first name, but he was pushing her buttons, so she could push him back. She knew that she would have to work with the Seeker. The girl was a wonderful flyer but she needed some work on her speed drills. Katie thought she might be able to convince the girl to some one on one work.

She returned her attention from Snape to her lunch, though her appetite was quickly fading.

Good mood so easily evaporated - or rather, Severus was more than willing to rise to the affront - he had come here looking for 'entertainment' one way or the other, and this was as good as any.

"Language, Ms Bell," he said, dropping her 'professional' title and adding the prefix which immediately suggested she might be of a different 'profession' entirely. "If the post is too difficult for you, I am certain the Headmistress can accommodate Slytherin's Quidditch team in some other fashion."

Thank Merlin Minerva had ended up hiring two people to cover Ravenclaw - perhaps Miss Turpin or Mr Davies could be persuaded to fill in if Miss Bell abandoned her post. He didn't know where the girl had learnt her respect, or lack thereof, but it was bloody well certain that no one else of her age ever called him by his given-name without express permission to do so. It was also certain that he had stipulated in the conditions of his agreement to her employment in the post, that she never do so again ( ... )

Oliver opened the door of the staff room, with Winifred toddling behind him. "Afternoon," he said in his usual gruff voice. Surveying the room, he realized that he had probably made a terrible mistake in coming here. There was Hermione (they have never really talked things out), and Katie (he was pretty sure she didn't want to see him), and Snape (who was basically just an ass). He would have taken Wini's hand and walked straight back out to go wait on the Quidditch pitch before it was time to coach, but his daughter had seen both Hermione and Snape, and started giggling. "Ermio!" she called, stepping ahead of her dad to run forward to her. "Ermio!"

Severus was just preparing to allow his 'good' mood to be well and completely soured by something so trivial as a pouty, sulking Gryffindor with no spine to stand up to her professed convictions, when the newest addition to the staff-room arrived.

Severus would not have hesitated to involve Wood in the Quidditch argument. Indeed, Wood, at least, might know how to argue proficiently without 'daring' to call him by name - and the other insults were likely to be colourful, if not unique.

The addition of Winifred changed everything, causing his mind to immediately recall with vivid detail the last time he had seen the precocious toddler. Folding his newspaper almost absent-mindedly, he set it aside and watched Winifred's interaction with Miss Granger. It was possible the child hadn't seen him, concealed behind the paper as he had been.

"Wood," he greeted crisply. "Coach Bell and I were just discussing Saturday's match. Congratulations. If your Chasers learn the purpose of a Quaffle, and your Keeper learns the hoops are for ( ... )

Oh my, now thing were awkward for HER. Things between Oliver and herself were… A mystery really, neither taking the steps to figure out what went on, but that had no impact on the little girl running at her.

Hermione grinned, closing her book and setting it on the floor and pulling the toddler into her lap. She’d never thought it possible to grow so close to a child, but she really just couldn’t help it.

“Wini, you’re huge! Tomorrow, you’ll be bigger than me!” Velvet soft hair was just as she remembered as she gently stroked the little girl’s hair.

She was honestly surprised when Snape addressed Wini directly and Hermione helped the little girl turn on her knee so she could face everyone else.

Were things always going to be awkward between Oliver and herself? Hermione met his eyes over Wini’s head, offering a smile and a nod of her head.

Snape really seemed eager to antagonize everyone today! Must be the weather…

She looked up from her lunch with dark and stormy eyes when she heard Snape address Oliver and Winifred's entrance into the room. Katie had put a Seeker in that was a female, but do you know what? Traditions were meant to be broken. It was against tradition for a Gryffindor to be coaching Slytherin wasn't it? The girl had flown her best and had just barely missed and here Snape was dressing her down to the other coach ( ... )

Katie was regulated back to her own brooding once Snape had decided to back off. She finished her food and then moved to get up to excuse herself. She knew that they were talking about the Quidditch game when Wini had so gracefully tattled on them. She wasn't going to let it bother her. Oliver could think whatever he wanted. It wasn't like SLytherin had gotten creamed. They had dominated the field play and it was only the catching of the Snitch that had gained Gryffindor the victory.

It had exposed some things for them to work on. Their beaters had been strong and their chasers had been excellent. The Keeping and Seeking needed work. She just sighed softly as she got up from her position at the table and excused herself from the room, heading off to go plan the next game. The round with Snape had left her in a surly mood and with a vicious headache to boot.
