Beven and Cian Finnigan rarely disagreed. They loved fiercely, lived peacefully and quarreled rarely. It was painful for both that a quarrel should ensue regarding the twenty-first birthday of their child, Seamus Aidan Finnigan. Beloved by both, the boy had been a gift, loving and kind, if mischievous around the edges. As a wizard, it was ironic that his father held the magical side of the argument in his hands, while his mother, a witch with an eye towards the future, did not.

It had become clear to Cian that his youngest son, Seamus, would never be totally happy outside of the realm of magic. His older sons, Frank and Will, were more than content in Kenmare, having moved here from Belfast when they were 10 and 12, respectively. The move had kept their family out of the Irish troubles, but not sheltered them from the magical ones. Cian had known when Seamus chose to fight The Dark Lord that he would never return to live beneath their roof again. Beven had yet to make her peace with that knowledge, and their son’s recent stay in St. Mungo’s had made her all the more fierce in her denial.

So it was that they quarreled over their son’s Birthday. They had agreed, Beven and Cian, upon a significant gift for their son. Now Beven was reluctant; reluctant to the point of tears and recriminations. She dug in her heels in her own Irish way, and steadfastly refused to budge on the matter. Cian used every scrap of knowledge he’d learned of his witchy wife in twenty-two years of marriage to convince Beven that they should at least purchase the gift, and hold it for Seamus, less the opportunity be lost. Properties in Diagon Alley were not that plentiful, especially now that the war was over and business was starting to recover in the wizarding district of London.

Their negotiated truce was a delaying tactic, but it would serve to see them through his Birthday.
