Pa. family: 'Friends' torture, kill disabled woman

Feb 13, 2010 12:59

it's been quite a long time since I posted one of these, and this one is profoundly disturbing. there's no part of this article that I can excerpt without explicitly mentioning violence, so consider yourself warned for triggers.
GREENSBURG, Pa. -- Jennifer Daugherty's mom and stepdad didn't press for details when she mentioned she had made some ( Read more... )

I read about this last night and was just...sick at heart. First for the poor girl and her family...but also for what it says about society.

What truly sickens me is the very obvious inference that the people who tortured this woman derived some enjoyment out of it. I can almost see how parts of it went down--a contest, let's see if she'll drink this! Disgusting. Abhorrent. Words fail describing my disgust and rage.

I am not really a violent person but I cannot imagine a punishment that is suitable for a crime so depraved.

And the icon is completely inadequate

I can almost see how parts of it went down--a contest, let's see if she'll drink this!Yes, that's exactly what I imagined as well. Something that began as "let's make fun of the retard," and just got more and more vile and horrible from there. It makes me wonder if they intended originally to kill her, or not. I don't know ( ... )

Oppression and violence are not "at the root" about men-over-women (or white-over-POC, or rich-over-poor, or nondisabled-over-disabled, or any other "original" type of oppression.) They are about those who fancy themselves strong over those they fear or loathe most, and there can be any reason behind that fear.

THIS.

And IMO it's not always about fear; sometimes it's just about contempt, and about doing something to someone purely because they can get away with it, because someone isn't fighting back, and therefore by some horrible logic that means they deserve disrespect at best and violent, manic fucking torture and murder at worst. ...various "roots" may be behind *that*, but not always - and even when they are, they aren't solely to blame.

In any case, this is horrifying, and I'm glad you posted it.

Some people (as we say in the South) need killin'. I think those assholes qualify. Pure meanness.

This is so against such a basic level values as "don't abuse the weak", that I wonder what went wrong in their development. Of all the ways people are socialized, then socialize themselves, this is the most bewildering.

I can understand being unaware, or even indifferent, to the fate of someone; but to actively try to bring someone low on general principles goes beyond even a feral "survival of the fittest". This is something you have to be TAUGHT.

(None of this intellectual curiosity and hope for a gentler society exactly gainsays my own visceral desire to lay waste to the whole mindlessly predatory crew.)
