I think it's probably safe to say that everyone out there has a movie script or book idea. In fact when I took a look at doing a 101 in 1001 a couple of years ago, I was surprised and perhaps a little dismayed at the large number of potential authors out there. I completely understand Robin Hobb's concern, but I think it's too preachy and judgmental. People work in different ways. Livejournal can definitely be a timesink, but only if you choose to let it. It's really a general problem with the internet as mass entertainment etc. There is always something to do instead of writing; it's just a question of what you choose to do.

Very well put! Have to agree about Robin's dictatory style, can see what she means but as you point out, it's all very do or don't, she doesn;t recognise any middle ground.

That's an excellent point about the internet itself being the timesink, in the end it's all about what you prioritise I guess, if you want to write then you will end up writing, if you aren't serious then you'll spend all day surfing!

Yes. For those somewhere in the middle, it's important to access the risk vs. benefits of different distractions. For example, I've taken to watching dvds instead of reading or doing other things that I tend to think of as having more value. That's on me. I've been working on not doing that so much, but it doesn't mean DVDs are evil and no one should ever watch them again.
