Poll Kirk

Bonus Question: Why? Why? Why? If you have the time, I'd love to hear why you picked what you picked. Why does that kind of story do it for you? Discuss!

kirk the gnome, poll, tell me a story

Ticky boxes! This is a poll that demands ticky boxes!

And I'm still trying to figure out why I read what I read. There are some basic rules like, if it's written by alazysod and features a Flogging Molly lyric in the title, then it will get read. If the title just screams "humor!" like "There's No Afterglow for Something That Officially Never Happened" or "The Extremely Smooth Seduction (And Don't Let Anyone Ever Tell You Otherwise) of Dr. Badass", then it'll probably get read. If the pairing makes me go "hmm...how's that work?", it might get read.

And what I read is even more diverse then what I write.

Hmm, tough questions, especially the first. It really depends on the fandom. All of the shows I watch that have incest pairings (PB, Supernatural, Black Donnellys, the occasional Heroes fic), I prefer that to most anything else. But for most fandoms, I prefer slash. Blah, I don't think that makes a whole lot of sense, but I think you know what I mean. I like slash over everything else, and I like incest slash in certain fandoms, but I don't necessarily prefer one or the other. It really depends on the characters and the fandom. As for genre, I love angst, and I love fluff, but my preferance would be angst with fluffy (or happy, if that's any different) ending :)

That's really hard to pick for me. It so depends on my mood or the fandom. If I love a fandom I'll probably read nearly anything. If I'm not in as deep I'm probably going to read only shorter stuff or stuff that sounds really interesting ( ... )

I should probably add that to me long/short, plot/not-plot is often a totally different experience for me. To me short and nice might be any easy fix if I love something and I just want a bit of something ( ... )

See? I personally am more character driven. The plot is only any good to me if it's used as a catalyst to take the person on some kind of journey where we get to see some emotional growth going on.

And from reading your plot summaries it seems like you kind of like the same thing. You mostly want the plot to be used as a way to push character A into doing something interesting or different.

I guess I see plot as this certain new 'thing' that you introduce, even if it's just a concept or just shows up in the beginning, that allows you to showcase the feelings of the characters ( ... )

Schmoop is characters professing their undying love for each other and caring for one another etc.

I usually see this as a description for slash as I believe it is called "romantic" in the Het verse. Basically I think it's to describe usually unemotional male characters acting all lovey dovey towards one another.

Ahhh, fuck, I hit "character driven" but I actually meant to pick plotty.

Plotty huh?

I get bored too easily. My ADD kicks in and I'm like... get to the good stuff! Where are the professions of undying love? :P

Do you find that you write what you read?

Because I would say your Miner's Lamp trilogy is more charcter driven than plotty. It's exactly the kind of thing I read, but I often don't write that type of stuff.

In fact, I rarely if ever read gen fic but I find that's what I usually end up writing.

No, not really - I'm very, very much a character driven author, as you say, way more so then plot or action or anything, but ... hmmm, maybe because I'm so character driven, I'm not very easily satisfied when it comes to character fics. Ahahaha maybe I like plotty fics as a vehicle for all of the character stuff, if that makes sense. I'll get bored with 30K words of schmoop, but give me a MOTW that parallels their angst and I'll eat that up. Although I think that's .... ummm, shit, it feels like I mostly write long, plotty, character-driven stories because that's what I'm working on right now, so I lose at perspective.
