Yeah, I dunno. I posted the link to the Microsoft help page (second post in a few seconds) and it said "your post has been marked as spam" but then the post appeared anyway.
Some modern linuxes are fine; no worse than Windows, certainly.
Part of what's going on with OSS is that some places that host OSS (open source software) have decided to monetize their projects by encouraging projects to use malware-installing windows installers (with a way to get at the non-broken installer if you're clever; ha, hah). I consider this evil, but it seems to be a Thing.
For windows, and non-evil OSS, I'd install xmbc -- it's a really good open source media player, and will also do dvd playing/ripping and a lot more.
