I kind of stumbled upon this, so my comment is a bit late, but I have to say that was a really interesting read. I thoroughly agree with you on the ambition part -- the DGM anime disappointed me as it went on, and yes, I did drop it around the fillers era. :/
Another thing about the anime that I didn't really catch reading this (though that may be because it's 2 AM 9_9), what really struck me was how toned down the anime was compared to the manga. The Lala arc, for instance, was IMHO one of the most touching scenes of all of this series. In the anime, they replaced Guzol's deformities with a mask, and I felt that really toned down the theme of an otherwise amazing story. :/ There were other things modified too, such as Road's torture methods during her first appearance. I suppose it's because a lot of scenes in DGM were too gruesome to be put on TV?
On another note, I actually quite liked Allen's voice. I found it boyish, yet balanced with his pesonality. :)
