Review/Picspam - Series 1, Episode 1: Rose

Jul 19, 2008 12:53

Travel back in time with me, if you will, to March 26th, 2005. Michael Jackson's in trouble for kiddie-fiddling...again, Terri Schiavo is in the news, and that wacky British programme about the alien flying around time and space in his phone booth is about to come back on the air.

Nine/Rose shippers: you'll want to come inside and enjoy this.

So, so not dial-up friendly, and some mild Series 4 spoilers )

series one, reviews/picspams

I love picspams, particularly of S1. I always think it's just nostalgia that I love that series so much until I actually watch it again and think, "No, damn it, it was special!" A lot of it, no doubt, is Christopher Eccleston (and I agree, I don't think the show would have been the same success, certainly not the same critical success without him - still the only man ever nominated for a BAFTA for playing the Doctor!). But the whole thing was more detailed and subtle - some of the byplay between Rose and Jackie just kills me ("Arianna got 2000 quid off the council because the man said she looked Greek; I mean, she is Greek, but that's not the point." Or Rose asking for and hanging up the phone.)

I'm with you on the pinpoint moment. I couldn't believe they were so comfortable with each other so fast. They have the most relaxed, and yet intense, body language I've ever seen - remarkable. (CE's 17.5 years older than BP, but Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall were 22 years apart... Doesn't matter. Bodies operate at a subconscious level ( ... )

"And correct me if I'm wrong, but he totally checks her out for a second. 'Asexual', my ass."

I don't think anyone bought asexual for a moment anyway. ;) Waaaay too much chemistry for that.

My moment of "OMG ROSE/DOCTOR 4 EVAR" was different than yours, but I have to say that scene with "You know that moment, when you're little and they tell you the Earth's spinnin' and you just can't believe it..." was one of the speeches that hooked me too the show because I definatly remember in Elementary school, laying on the football (soccer) feild and knowing I could feel the earth turn. Anyway, I'm not sure what bearing this has on anything, but I do recall NOT liking 9 til about halfway through the series when I started to realize he was just a big ol' softy. Thanks for sharing your pictures. :)

I still just can't believe that Christopher Eccleston did this, bless him....NO ONE could have brought the Doctor back the way he did. I fully believe the new series would never have succeeded without him.

I totally agree. He's brilliant. And the chemistry between him and Billie is amazing. :)

This much pink makes baby Jesus cry, Rose.

LOL! That much pink makes anybody with an ounce of taste cry, Rose!

It kind of broke my heart in an interview I saw with him once, where he was talking about how he really enjoys doing comedy, he just never gets to because everyone only ever offers him these spooky, serious roles.

Yeah, typecasting is a pain in the arse for actors. Especially for someone as talanted as CE, to have to play the same roles, over and over, when you're just aching to try something new.

Great picspam! :D
