Thank you! I've been trying to make him more three-dimensional, a bit more sympathetic.

I really like this look into how John might have been working behind the scenes to help. And his memories of wee!Dean are touching.

I don't think he ever abandoned the boys in any real sense - I'm sure they were on his mind all the time.

Glad you liked the fic!

It always bugged me that John hadn't responded to Sam's call about Dean being at death's door, so this is a nice spin on how he might have reacted to the phone-message

Ah! I like this a lot. I like the twist and the end, and how John struggles with himself here. Nice work.

John. ARRGGH. I waffle between understanding him and thinking he's a stubborn cuss who needs to get his priorities straight. I know he loves those boys more than anything, but sometimes a little less drill sergeant and a little more father would have been a good thing.

'Course, then Dean and Sam might not be the poeple I know and love SO MUCH.

That's true - we're all a product of everything that's happened to us. I've sometimes thought, "I wish [something] hadn't happened" - and then I realize, I like where I am now, and if I'd made different choices, I might not be as content with the end result.
