There are extra-curricular activities...and then there's this craziness. His brother, playing a dead kid. In a stupid thing called Our Town.

Like that makes any kind of sense at all.

CHARACTERS:  Dean (age 20) and Sam (age 16)
GENRE:  Gen

"Head for the shelters! Dean thinks. Scramble the fighters!"

I think Dean's inner dialogue is my favourite part of your stories! Too funny! And poor Sam. It's not easy being Dean's brother sometimes...

I love writing those inner monologues - Dean is so vocal that it's not difficult to get into his head space to tell a story. Fun!

Glad you enjoyed it!

lol- poor Sammy, trying so hard to be normal...But Dean is so right!
*haz always been suspicious of the narrowness of acceptable range of options to display well roundedness*

I know, right? When I was in school, they wanted to you play sports, join the social clubs, all that stuff. Anyone who preferred to do something more quiet and focused on the individual... you were a geek. A nerd. A loser.

So, heck - Dean had a lot of valuable skills, even then! Who else in his class would have known how to gank a fugly? *g*

Yey! More teen!chesters!
I've always loved how different the boys' world views seemed in the beginning of the Show, of course it must've started earlier than that. I really like how you present it in your story. No big words, no epic fights, just a school play. A very nice read.

I think Sam probably "drank the Kool-Aid" as far as the common view of "success" went - good grades, aim for college, play sports, do the extracurriculars, etc. I see that situation these days, with the focus being You Must Go To College. Not everyone is suited for college. Not everyone would do well at it, or would WANT to do well at it. We do love to try to shove people into boxes. And I think there are a lot of kids (like Dean) who are the victims of that, and end up thinking poorly of themselves.

But that's a HUGE topic, and I'm running short on time! Glad you liked the story. :)

Oh, definitely. It always strikes me as funny how simplified and stereotypical their idea of this strange utopic "normal" is. Because, honestly, what does "normal" mean? They both crave "normality" at different stages of their lives but it's all messed up in their poor heads.

Not everyone is suited for college.

That's true. Nothing wrong about it, people are different, yada, yada, yada. A bunch of truisms. So I just can't get why it so often escapes people's understanding. And, as you say, in the result this pressure may cause a lot of harm, whether this would be low self-esteem or doing something againt oneself.

I remember seeing someone on TV years ago, saying very plainly, "There is no 'normal'." The best you can say is, there's society's view of some strange ideal lifestyle - that very few people actually fit into. It was a sad commentary on things when Sam finally admitted to Dean that the whole time he was at Stanford, he never felt like he belonged.

I suppose The Powers That Be figure that if they promoted individuality, there'd be anarchy. No one would follow the rules. It's easier to "govern" (*cough*rule*cough*) people if they're intimidated and fearful.

I like this! Dean is making Sam really think about his choices and the consequences. And in the end, Sam really does want to be the hero :P

What's funny about this is in high school we also put on a performance of "Our Town." I also happened to be one of the dead kids. So I kind of know how both boys feel.

Another good one!
