We know Dean always wanted to help, this story put a face on John's feelings about Dean's hunting.

I realy liked Bobby here. He was fatherly and for a moment I forgot all about John existing. But John here was in good form, fatherly, loving and seeing Dean as a child and not a soldier.

Bobby was pretty awesome before the writers messed with him! And John...I've always felt John loved his kids with all his heart. Just didn't express it well enough.
