Although we all tend to think it would have been nice to have John in the show a little bit longer, I think Kripke totally made the right decision. Dean could never have become the man he is if John was still around. Much as he might yearn for the comfort of knowing he's around - just like this - it's only when John's gone that Dean really becomes more independent and self-reliant. (As long as Sam's around. Obviously.)
This was truly lovely. Very lyrical and poetic and demonstrating perfectly the enormity of the task facing Dean.
