SPN FIC - A Place of Echoes

A lot of episodes need a coda, or some filling-in in the middle.  This was the first one I've seen that needed a beginning - because, really, Show?  Why go there if you don't explain?

For the Australians: this is spoilery for the location of 5.17, and for the condition Sam and Dean are in in the opening scene of the episode.  Not spoilery for the ( Read more... )

I really enjoyed this. The last two lines were just perfect and leave a world of possibilities about how bad that trip to the car really was. Nicely written, thank you.

Thanks, Debbie! I spent all night wondering whether there was an opening scene to the episode that got cut for time. Then I decided to put one together - because we need to do things like that, right?

I kept thinking, through the whole episode, that there would be at least a mention of Jim - or that this was a place they used to go when they were kids. Something! But...nada. So I wonder if there was a scene, or a mention, that got cut because they figured people wouldn't notice. Kripke should know us better than that!

Glad you enjoyed this little insert. :)

My US geography not being brilliant, when I heard Sam say "Blue Earth" I immediately thought "Pastor Jim!" but then when there was no mention of him wondered if it was another Blue Earth in a different state.

Accidental? Show? Unlikely.

But odd.

This was lovely though. You captured Dean's sense of despair and hopelessness perfectly, right down to Sam annoying him for no other reason that being the one who's still there with him. Dean's got a right to feel sorry for himself right now. But so has Sam. And it does show how messed up Dean is that he doesn't take that into account too.

I really liked how you had Dean dwelling on a childhood that was never really safe, but feels like it was from the perspective he's looking at it now. And Pastor Jim was the perfect way to do that.

I played it back this morning, just to make sure I hadn't hallucinated the first time around - Sam definitely said, "Blue Earth, Minnesota." So, BAD Show for not even mentioning Pastor Jim. They didn't need to say much, just a mention that the boys knew the town. Used to know a pastor there. But maybe all of that got cut for time. I guess it's a question to ask the writers next time a blogger solicits questions for an interview. :)

Glad you liked this little piece - I debated letting it go on longer, but in the end I decided to just do a couple of scenes, as if they're what got cut out.

i missed the first couple minutes of the episode because my clock is slow, so when "blue earth, mn" flashed on screen i wondered if there'd been a mention of pastor jim and i'd just missed it. but then there was no reference at all, and with the minister and the church and the religious folks it would've been so appropriate i couldn't figure out why the ptb would set an episode there and not mention pastor jim or give any indication that the boys had been there before. so this fic fills in the blank space nicely, and i like dean's despair at finding out a formerly-safe place isn't so safe any more, and that sam keeps trying to figure out what happened. it's quiet and emotionally resonant.

I know - it's *so* odd that they'd set the episode there and not mention the town's significance, particularly with the story involving a pastor and his flock. But I'm sure they thought no one would notice. *eyeroll*

I'm glad you enjoyed the story - given what came afterward (within the episode itself) I knew I had to keep it pretty bleak.

the bizarre mention of blue earth caught me by surprised. it was weird that they made no mention of past reference. not only that but at the start of the episode sam is bleeding all over the place telling dean to drive faster, but once those guys show up with the firetruck of holy water, he's fine. wth? did i miss something? they seemed to have jumped rt into the middle of an episode right from the start and then all the action just tapered off until that awesome closing scene. idk i am just still confused. so ty for writing this. it fits in perfectly.

You're very welcome! After the ep was over, I sat here thinking, "What did they chop off of the beginning?" Obviously (given the boys' condition, and the few words of explanation) they ran into a whole crowd of demons and had a tough time getting away. But my mind wanted a bit more, especially in a town as significant to their past as Blue Earth. C'mon, Show - Pastor Jim was their go-to guy!
