SPN FIC - Drunk

Mar 28, 2010 11:21

Sometimes something as simple as a couple of words creates a story.  In this case it's two words:  Town drunk.  From there, a look at Bobby, and loss, through the years.

He ought to be more compassionate, he supposes, but compassion's always been in short supply in the Singer bloodline.  Once in a while he thinks that if his father would just cry, ( Read more... )

You really captured the essential despair of the characters in this season, and your Bobby POV feels so perfect.

And yet...even though there is no way to fix the pain, Dean still comes to sit with Bobby, just to be there.

And that is why we care about them.

I think that's why I've had to keep stepping away from the show periodically - the despair gets to be too much to take. *sighs*

I don't know how the Bobby situation will ultimately play out, but for now, I wanted him to have a moment of comfort. So I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)

That was awesome. I was hoping someone would write about 'Bobby Singer, The Town Drunk.' Love the ending with him and Dean, i love that relationship almost as much as Sam and Dean (maybe, gasp, a little more).

It was something I couldn't resist! The setup is a little peculiar, because Sioux Falls *isn't* a small town, so it's unlikely that its citizens would be singling out Bobby (or anybody else) as "the town drunk." But it did tickle my imagination. Glad you enjoyed the results!

Poor Bobby! I don't think I've ever read a young!Bobby fic before (or part of a fic, I suppose), so it was very interesting!

Loved it, as always! :)

No, I don't think I've read anything about young Bobby either. I was interested in Karen's remark that he was a "mild-mannered scrap dealer" when they were married, which allowed for a little bit of foundation-building. Bobby being who he is, and being very obviously blue collar, I didn't interpret "mild-mannered" as being average-middle-American-guy. Just...quiet about whatever was on his mind.

Thanks for the comments - I'm glad you enjoyed the fic. :)

Oh, the Bobby backstory. Just heartbreaking and so much like truth. I can just see him becoming who he is today after that beginning. And the heartbreak of his wife, the way he started getting his dogs, Dean. Oh, so sad and such excellent characterization of all of them. Love Dean coming to Bobby at the end, both of them so done, yet unable to stop going. Beautiful.

I was thrilled at the little bits of backstory in the episode - it's always nice to have a few building blocks that I can start with. Glad you liked what I came up with! Thanks for commenting. :)

That was a really well-observed look at both Bobby's character now, and what shaped that character in the past. I especially liked the part about Bobby's dad - which is something I don't think I've ever seen on the show or in fan fic.

Oh and I'm glad you're giving season 5 another chance.

Thank you for this. You've given voice to everything I've been trying to explain to people since this last episode.

That house just seems like it might have had kind of a bleak history. Then a short period of bright blue paint, flower beds and sunshine (and pie) while Karen lived there, followed by a return to dust, piles of old books, and a lack of vibrant life. Poor Bobby. :(

This season's been so utterly despairing that I have to keep stepping away. (And I could live without all the cannibalism, 'cause I mean...eeeeeeee.) But I'll stick with it and see where it goes. Because those darn boys keep luring me back in.

Glad you enjoyed the story!
