SPN FIC - The Box (Part 1 of 6)

Aug 01, 2009 16:15

The story began here.

Summer 2000.  John, the boys, and Bobby are in a small Connecticut coastal town investigating signs of demon activity.  Or John and Bobby are, at least.  Dean's delivering pizza (with a side order of Dean) and Sam has taken a job doing yard work for a young couple with a big, rambling house on a bluff overlooking the ocean.  A ( Read more... )

Yeah, this one's been languishing for quite a while. I kept trying to jump-start it but had no luck - then last weekend I sat out in the yard with pen and paper and got it outlined through to the end. Yays!

I'm glad you're liking it so far!

I already like Peter and Larkin, so I'm worried about what might happen to them.

I really like how you've got Sam having interaction with someone who used to mow lawns and now is an attorney. That seems exactly how he might have made some of his decisions about his life path.

And poor, disenfranchised Sammy--he's smart enough to see all the ways he doesn't fit in with "normal" society, but desperately does not want to be a permanent part of the hunting world, either.

I'm looking forward to more. :)

I've changed it somewhat from the original draft, where Peter was actually giving the career advice to Sam - 'cause Kripke hit me with "After School Special." (Plus, caffienekitty said his level of interest sounded a little stalkerish and creepy, and she was right.) Now, Sam's got that advice from his teacher in his back pocket, and he's just got John's and Dean's assumptions about his future to contend with - and an actual role model to think about.

Really, I'm glad that people are taking more of an interest in reading about Sam. When I started posting fic two years ago, Sam fic got almost *zero* interest. Poor Sammy.

Next chap? I'm hoping to have that finished by the end of the week. Maybe a little sooner.

I like this better, Carol. I think it that Sam coming to his own conclusion about Peter feels more likely.

Sam doesn't NEED someone to tell him what to do or offer advice in that respect. He already has John telling him what he needs to do. I think he would much more readily accept advice not given, just shown.

I love Bobby here. The idea of Dean hogging up the bathroom and Bobby growling outside trying to get in. That made me laugh.

I like too John and Bobby's relationship. As much as I love John by himself, John and Bobby together make for a wonderful read.

I am so excited that you are posting!

They always say "Show, don't tell" when it comes to writing - and I think it's true in life as well. Seeing someone serve as a good example, and thinking "I could do that" or "I could have that" probably works a lot better than being told "You need to do this." I know I personally get pretty balky when I'm told "You HAVE to..." So yes, I agree: just seeing what Peter has accomplished would have a pretty strong effect on Sam. Everybody needs those role models. (And I wish RL kids had some better ones these days.)

I love that scene with Dean hogging the bathroom, and coming out looking...the same. Sort of Fonzie-like in his view of "Why mess with perfection?" *g*

I'm excited about it too! I need to head for Target in a few minutes, but once I'm done with errands I can sit down to work on Part 2. Woot!

I really liked this! Sam, feeling so cut off from his family and trying to formulate his own desires for the future; Dean, tagging along to check out the Hobbs place and see what's Sam's up to, both independent and in need at the same time. I love seeing John and Bobby working together (as much as they are working together), too. I look forward to the next piece. :)

I'm glad you're enjoying it! It's such a pivotal time in Sam's life (and by extension, Dean's and John's) - and yet it doesn't involve huge cosmic events, so I thought it would be interesting to explore.

I generally wait till WIPs are done, but couldn't resist a sneak peak. I really like the Sam you're drawing out for us here. His thoughts, his relationship with his family... everything rings true.

Got a nice spooky casefic going on, with interesting OCs, too. (Frankly, I love the thought that Sam is stepping into a situation that badly hurt his predecessor, with *no idea* that he's walking into a case. He's just trying to be normal and make a little money. We don't see this in fic often, but it makes perfect sense that if they're living in locales where there may be something supernatural going on, sometimes the hunt may find them when they aren't looking for it!)

Looking forward to the rest soon!!

Hee - I'm glad I lured you in!

The casefic part of it was the first nugget I had - Sam and Dean discovering something that really spins things around. For a long time I didn't know what to *do* with it. But for some reason, after 14 months of the story sitting quietly in a corner, it came to life and I was able to outline it through to the end. I hope you'll enjoy the ride. :)
