Andy tried to keep smiling, even though it was actually starting to hurt her face. Nate looked so good in his suit, although a tie would have been a nice touch given that this was supposed to be a special day. Still, he'd always had that cute, scruffy thing going on. Andy tried not to dwell on the fact that she just didn't find it as cute as she used to.
Looking around the tiny wood-panelled room, she turned her wavering smile on her hastily assembled friends. Lily looked stunning in a pale blue dress, a flower adorning her dark curls, and Doug managed to be the smartest looking guy in the room, no small achievement given that Nigel sat next to him. Serena was the only other guest from Andy's time at Runway, since Emily had hung up after Andy had called to invite her.
She tried not to think what her parents would say about not being here. A visit soon would hopefully smooth things over, and hey, they loved Nate. With a cough, the officiant got the attention of the room, and Andy blushed at feeling everyone's eyes on her.
Nate reached for her hands, and Andy felt them tremble as she brushed his palms with her own. How had they gone so quickly from 'on a break' to this? Only two weeks ago, Nate had been planning to move to Boston, and when she went with him to buy an AmTrak ticket, Andy hadn't been expecting a stop at City Hall.
He proposed right there on the steps, explaining that they could go in and apply for a license there and then. The happy look on his face as he asked her, the unexpected romance of the proposal with his grandmother's ring, and Andy hadn't had the heart to say no. A few months ago this would have been the best thing she could imagine, and she had to believe that giddiness would come back as she started her new job and new life.
Maybe it had been foolish to accept a cancellation slot for two days later, but Andy tried to call it carpe diem. Ringing her friends had only produced squeals of excitement, and Nigel had shown up at her apartment three hours later with the most exquisite (although two seasons old) Vera Wang dress. In the face of all that love and enthusiasm, Andy had decided to embrace her good luck and hope that everything worked out over time.
The officiant was droning on about the seriousness of marriage, and the nature of the commitment. Andy thought of her parents, thirty years married and still going strong. She thought about how Nate looked after her when she had the flu, about how she felt safe when he held her. Her smile didn't feel so fake when she met his eyes again, and Andy thought she might finally be relaxing into the idea.
The dull little officiant kept talking, and Andy forced herself to listen.
Into this lifelong commitment these two persons present now come to be joined. If any person can show just cause why they may not be joined together - let them speak now or forever hold their peace.
There was a giggle from Lily in that moment, which was cut short by the creak of the huge double doors flying open. In the doorway stood Emily, doubled over and out of breath, holding a pair of bright red Vivienne Westwood shoes in her hand.
"Wait!" She gasped, before standing aside and almost collapsing on the floor.
In her wake, Miranda came sweeping into the room. Andy felt faint at the sight, having not laid eyes on her former boss since the day of her interview at the Mirror. Andy caught Nigel clutching at Doug's arm out of the corner of her eye, but she didn't dare look at Nate.
"It's true then?" Miranda spoke as quietly as ever, but every syllable was clearly heard in the stunned silence of the tiny wedding party.
"Miranda?" Andy squeaked. She could feel everyone's attention swinging back to her, and that did not bode well at all.
"Andréa, I hope you're not about to disappoint me again. Marrying your college sweetheart? Really?"
"Hey!" Nate protested, but Andy placed a warning hand on his forearm. The last thing she wanted on her wedding day was Nate getting into a battle with Miranda. She'd have no husband left.
"My marriage plans are none of your business, Miranda," Andy said, feeling some of her shaken confidence return. "I don't remember inviting you."
Her eyes hidden behind those signature Tom Ford sunglasses, Miranda was as inscrutable as ever. Her lips were most definitely pursed though, and Andy felt a fresh wave of sympathy for every designer who'd ever had that turned on them.
"I believe this little man was asking about objections?"
The officiant nodded, his mouth hanging open as he tried to make sense of the scene in front of him.
"I object." Miranda stated quite calmly, in the same way that she would fire someone or declare a run-through to be a complete waste of time.
"Miranda, you can't do this!" Andy wailed, no longer caring if she looked ridiculous. She also tried really, really hard not to notice how good Miranda looked in that pale gray suit, that even an out of practise Andy could still identify as the latest offering from Stella McCartney.
"I believe I just did. Or has your career change somehow rendered you deaf?"
Andy looked to Lily for support, but her best friend seemed dumbstruck by the unexpected turn of events. Doug and Nigel were trying not to laugh, the bastards, and Nate was staring at Andy with suspicion etched into his face.
"Why are you objecting Miranda?"
"Because, Andréa," Miranda began, shaking her head at her former assistant, "you belong with me. I had hoped your leaving in Paris was a chance for us to move forward. Instead I find you marrying the first fry cook who asks you. Unacceptable."
If Andy had been teetering in her Manolos before, she was definitely in danger of falling now. She had tried so hard to forget that stolen kiss in Paris, her desperate plea to make Miranda listen to her when Miranda had been talking about freesias instead of the attempted coup. Andy had told everyone, including herself, that she'd left out of loyalty to Nigel. Not wanting to turn into Miranda was seen as a valid reason. Not wanting to be seduced by Miranda would have been much harder to sell, and so Andy had ignored that part altogether.
What she didn't want was for Nate to find out, not like this. Sure, they'd been on a break, and her dalliance with Christian Thompson had been confessed and forgiven. That sleeping with him meant less to her than kissing Miranda should probably have been a pretty big warning sign. Andy sighed, wondering how in the hell her life had turned out this way.
"What are you saying?" She asked, hoping that playing dumb would somehow make Miranda go away.
"Oh, for God's sake," Miranda muttered. Then the world officially stopped turning, because Andy saw only her former boss marching towards her, perfectly poised in deadly red heels.
All her instincts to protect Nate, to hide the truth from her friends, melted away as Miranda came to a halt right in front of Andy. She could see the next step, a blessing for an assistant, but a curse for Andy's willpower. The next step was Miranda's mouth pressed bruisingly against her own, claiming Andy in front of everyone she cared about. Even the groan of pain, or disgust, from Nate wasn't enough to stop Andy kissing back.
When Miranda allowed them to break for air, Andy hung her head.
"Nate, I'm so sorry," she started to explain, but he cut her off.
"I should have known. Christ, Andy. Way to break my heart."
With that, he took off, followed by Lily, Doug, and his friends from the restaurant he'd worked at until recently. The officiant stared at Andy, seemingly astounded by what he'd just witnessed. Well, Andy thought to herself, at least we've blown this civil servant's mind.
"Is the wedding off?" He asked, which had to go down as the dumbest question of the day. Mercifully, Emily stepped in at that point, ever the efficient assistant.
"Of course it's bloody off. If there's any paperwork, I'll take care of it. But you're done."
Andy looked down at the champagne-colored silk of her simple gown, her hand reaching instinctively to pull the clip from her neat up-do and letting her hair fall down in messy curls. She watched in silence as the officiant made his way out into the hallway, followed at a discreet distance by Serena and Nigel. Emily gave Andy a warning look before departing, leaving Miranda and Andy alone at last.
“Um…” she began, gratified that Miranda had finally pulled the obscuring glasses from her eyes. She felt better when the striking blue was staring back at her.
“Come home with me, Andréa. Nothing’s been right since you left.”
Anyone else would have apologized for ruining the day, but Andy wasn’t entirely sure that Miranda had ruined anything that wouldn’t have fallen apart by itself. How many times had Miranda invaded her dreams, doing so much more than kissing? Andy supposed she might be mad to even entertain the idea, mad to give up her sweet and handsome chef for a gorgeous but difficult totalitarian, but on some gut level, it felt completely right.
“I’m in my wedding dress.”
Miranda rolled her eyes at the obviousness of the statement.
“There’s a change of clothes in the car. Emily will arrange to move your things whenever you want. Of course, you might not want to move in right away-“
Andy squeaked at that, not able to contain her shock.
“Uh, Miranda? Could we maybe get past first base before you start changing my address?”
Miranda looked put out at the suggestion, but shrugged in that beautiful and maddening way of hers.
“I thought you’d never ask. Come on, the car is waiting.”
With a shake of her head, Andy did as she was told. Somewhere in the vast hallway, Miranda reached for Andy’s hand, and the firmness of her grip suggested that for all the surprises, the feelings might actually be sincere.
Later, Andy knew she’d have to deal with the fallout, not least making sure that Nate was okay. Somewhere along the line she’d become this new Andy they all accused her of being - one who put her own needs first. And right now, after two weeks of pining and feeling adrift, Andy knew exactly what she needed: Miranda.
Luckily for her, it seemed that Miranda felt the same.
