Chapter 22

Adam decided to wake his little lover up with a kiss. Tommy woke with a bit of a start, but as soon as he saw Adam, his eyes lit up. He threw his arms around the man and laughed; he was so happy to see him. Adam had a soft look in his eyes and gave Tommy a more proper, love filled kiss. Tommy kissed him back, the smallest moan escaping him, then he pulled back and smiled.

"What time is it?" he asked.

"Late. It is after eleven," Adam stated.

"It is early. You're home before midnight!" Tommy was elated.

Adam conceded. "Did you have dinner?"

Tommy looked guilty with a bit of a pout. "I wanted to wait for you."

Adam clicked his tongue against his teeth a few times, feigning disappointment. He pulled Tommy's stiff body from the stairs and mumbled, "Come on..." He took Tommy into the kitchen.

He sat the boy down with some seasoned rice and bread at the dinner table and ate a helping of his own. Tommy was quiet, scarfing down the food, and Adam would steal thoughtful glances at the boy. When they were done, they left the dishes for morning and went upstairs. Adam asked Tommy to wait in his bedroom while he cleaned up. He didn't want the boy to see him taking care of his soiled blade. Then he went into the master bedroom to change as Tommy took his turn with the soap and water.

Adam came out and stood in the doorway of the washroom to wait for Tommy. "What did you do this evening?" he asked.

Tommy was drying his hands. "I fell asleep for a little bit and then washed up and got dressed. Then I just sat and thought about you. I can't help but worry, but I'm trying not to be afraid."

"I am happy to hear that," said Adam, and he took Tommy's hand to lead him out into the hall. "Will you sleep in my room tonight?"

Tommy lit up again. "I will sleep wherever you are!"

"My bed is larger. Perhaps we can both use it from now on?"

Tommy hugged him, loving the idea.

They both went in, and Tommy stripped his clothes and got into Adam's bed with nothing on. Adam, who was already in bed attire, decided to do the same, and he left the lamp lit beside the bed so he could blow it out whenever they were ready to go to sleep.

Tommy had slept in this room only once before when Adam laid his shaken body down on the bed and held him as he slept. That night seemed like ages ago, but the mood seemed too nice to think about the bad things, so he pushed them out of his mind. Then he remembered something he wanted to ask Adam while he'd waited for him to return. He'd been thinking about Adam's descriptions of the Nydren Temple and Thyre in general, and there was another thing he wondered about.

"Adam?"

"Hm?"

"Do men of your country mess about with each other? Like they do in Winserra?"

Adam knew Tommy was curious and so he answered patiently. "Not usually, from what I know. Mating is taken more seriously in Thyre, meant largely for creating life rather than..." he searched for the word, "...recreation. What you call brothels and Ladronels here are harder to find in my country. Most men find a wife of their own."

"So...it's always a man and a woman?"

"Not necessarily. I may have heard of two men coupling before I left Thyre but never knew it for myself until I came to this city. For me, it feels natural, but I suppose if I stayed in Nydren, I would be expected to take a wife and have at least one child. Such a thing is useless here though. There is no point in producing children of my own...for what legacy do I leave behind? It makes more sense that I should have you in my bed."

Tommy smiled, then it faded as he asked seriously, "So...you'll never marry then?"

"That I have never wanted...and moreover, my heart is set on you, Thomas. You are my mate now because I have given myself to you out of love. That is the necessary bond when it comes to marriage after all. Thyrens believe in love; we believe that there is one person for another...and I have found you."

Tommy became impassioned and overcome with love, and he kissed Adam deeply on the lips.

Adam put out the lamp, and they felt each other blindly in the dark, making love until they were too tired to stay awake anymore. They fell asleep in each other's arms.

Adam wanted to eat quickly and leave as soon as possible. He said they were going into town. Tommy wasn't expecting this but felt a bit of excitement at the thought of going somewhere. It wasn't that he was cooped up; he'd rather be at the cottage than anywhere, but the thought of going some place with Adam made him feel wanted once again.

Unfortunately, Adam said that they should not be seen together, just as a precaution. If someone recognized Tommy in the city, either his old landlord or a patron of the symphony, then they might take note of the man at his side and begin to wonder and ask questions. No one was to take note of Adam lest they recognize him while he was in pursuit of someone. His position as assassin could be compromised.

Tommy was disappointed and didn't want to go so much anymore, but Adam explained that he wanted to finally get Tommy fitted for a suit or two. "Every man in Winserra who can afford a suit has one."

"What's the point?" Tommy pouted. "I don't want to go any place where I have to wear one unless I'm with you."

"If Simon extends another invitation, you could dress," Adam suggested. "You...ec-expressed as much before."

Tommy never wanted to see Simon again but knew it couldn't be avoided if he was asked.

Then Adam added, "There will be other occasions...you will see. Plus, I want to give you this gift."

Tommy looked at him. "You don't have to give me anything else...just you." He meant it.

But Adam would have his way. He gently cradled Tommy's face in his hands and smiled. That was all it took, and Tommy caved in his resolve.

They rode in, but before they could be spotted together, Adam left Tommy off the horse and directed him to which tailor he was to visit. It happened to be far from Karamati's. Tommy walked along the streets alone with a purse full of gold for the first time in weeks but had been assured by Adam that he would be watched constantly. As Tommy entered the shop and was being fitted, he took every opportunity to glance out of the shop window and soon spotted Adam. He was standing across the street in plain view but no one seemed to be paying attention. It wasn't unusual to see a man rest or wait at a lamppost, so they walked passed the tall man wearing the top hat and dark spectacles. If anyone stopped to make friendly conversation and inquire what Adam was doing, Tommy imagined he'd come up with some lie... 'My wife is at the boutique' or 'my brother is buying a new pair of boots, and I needed some air.'

Tommy's attention was diverted when the tailor's assistant asked which colors he'd like for the two suits he was ordering. Tommy looked at him solemnly and uttered, "Black..." The young man could think it was for a funeral if he wanted; Tommy didn't care. When they were done, Tommy was given a ticket with instructions to return in two day's time. Tommy paid and left the shop. He appeared then to be the only one to notice Adam, but just in time to see the man walk away toward the direction they'd come. Tommy followed on his own side of the street.

After returning home, the two of them were quiet. Adam prepared a light lunch before they would begin various chores. During a break, they both sat under a very old looking tree, and Tommy let benign thoughts travel through his mind.

Adam took Tommy's hand in his and sighed without looking at him. Tommy adored the affection, so happy that Adam wanted him. He was leaning against the tree trunk and looking at his lover's profile, smiling lovingly. Again his eyes traced the man's features and an inquiry entered his mind.

"Adam?"

"Hm?" Adam was listening but continued to hold Tommy's hand and stare at nothing.

"Do you think about your father sometimes?"

Adam looked at him, wondering where such a random question came from. But there was no harm in answering, so he did. "There was a time, I suppose. It is only natural...for an orphan to wonder. But those are things for children to question. A man could hardly care about such things."

"So you don't care who your parents were?"

"Not so much anymore. They gave me life, so I am bound to them by appreciation, but...who they were will not tell me anything that I need to know about myself."

Tommy was quiet. "You don't miss them?" he finally asked.

Adam sighed. He was only humoring Tommy with answers but really didn't care. "I do not remember them...only the Temple."

Tommy supposed that was an answer. "Who raised you, though? If you were so small, someone must have looked after you."

Adam said, "No one in particular. I learned all I needed to know from watching others and from lessons. From a young age, I knew that it was my responsibility to use others as examples and learn from my own mistakes."

"So..." Tommy began but hesitated. "...you don't really know what it's like to have a family? No one treated you even like a son?" Tommy felt sad, knowing his own family life was similar except he was actually related to them.

Adam sighed but didn't sound annoyed. He seemed to be considering. "There was one man. He was a Nydren Master named Dominik. I...uh..." He sighed again, frustrated from not knowing the word in Tommy's language. "Uh...I...look up at him?" He looked at Tommy for help, not sure of the phrase he used.

"You looked up to him," Tommy said, trying to guess the real word Adam was trying to say. "Admired?"

Adam squeezed Tommy's hand and smiled as a thank you. Tommy tried to hide his shiver at the sight. "Yes..." he said softly. "I admired him. I was very, very small, but I remember thinking he was the greatest man known to me. I do not even remember why or what made me think that. He did not treat me any different from the other students, and I cannot think of anything he could do that the other Masters could not. It could have been something as simple as the fact that his hair was the same color as mine." He shrugged. "I believe children think in such strange ways that only makes sense to them. To this day, I do not know why I thought so much of him."

"I'm glad you had someone to look up to," said Tommy.

Adam looked at him and asked Tommy one of his very rare personal questions. "And what of you, then? Tell me about your family."

Tommy's face fell gradually, and he looked away. He said very, very lightly, "Some other day, my love...alright?"

Adam wouldn't push this one or use his trick to get his way. But after a moment, he made Tommy turn his face to him, and he kissed the boy gently on the lips. Tommy couldn't hide his shiver then.

***

Adam had ridden to the House of Cowell, but Tommy didn't know he was back until he walked through the front door. A return this early meant that Adam didn't have to work tonight, and Tommy ran into his arms and kissed him with such joy. On any night like this, the two of them always celebrated by going to bed early and staying there practically the whole night.

A fit of silliness overcame Tommy as he cheekily pulled Adam's hat down over his eyes and giggled. "Catch me!" He bolted for the staircase. Adam quickly lifted up his hat and removed it, not certain what was happening. Tommy was halfway up the staircase before he finally gave chase.

Adam's longer legs allowed him to cross distances just a bit quicker, and he was gracefully pursuing the giggling boy with ease. The anticipation of being caught caused Tommy to erupt into a short fit of laughter mixed with screaming as he ran down the hall, looking for Adam over his shoulder.

By now, the closer Adam got, the more he understood. Tommy had drawn him into a game, making him the hunter. He ran a little faster, determined to catch his prey before he could reach the bedroom or whatever hiding place the boy had in mind. He caught him about the waist, indeed just before Tommy reached the bedroom, which was illuminated by two lamps. Tommy let out a scream at the contact and was breathing heavily.

"I win..." Adam whispered in his ear and for the first time, Tommy heard thick desire in the man's voice. Since it was Adam, and not some pervert who was paying him, Tommy was fine with it. In fact, the tone and Adam's breath tickling his ear was rather seductive to the blonde, and he shivered against his captor.

In Adam's loose grip, Tommy turned to face him and slid his hands up Adam's chest until they locked behind his neck. Adam held the boy more firmly now, pressing his thin body against his own and bent to give him an intoxicating kiss.

Tommy sighed and was moaning already. He could feel tingling between his legs at being pressed against Adam, front to front, and the kiss was making his body weak. His heart was beating fast in anticipation of making love again. He felt like he wanted to do something...more...the way he felt when he was with Kris. He wanted to make Adam lose himself...just a bit.
