I see you are a RH fan too.

About Larbalestier's post... hmm. I don't think she's saying that what she writes is only for herself and she doesn't care about other readers or what impact it has, but she's not writing with an agenda to make the world a better place with her writing (or, specifically, to provide books that meet someone else's criteria of What YA Lit Needs More Of).

And that seems fair enough to me. So yes, I'm sure how she markets her books is not beneath her notice, but she's saying she didn't set out to target the YA audience in particular.

I don't see how "Write your own books" is an inappropriate response to what she is responding to, which is the charge that she should be writing what someone else wants her to write.

I've been chewing on some of the responses to this post and I'll get back to you when I've fully digested what you've said. I think we interpreted the piece very differently. Which is fair enough. I don't think that YA should require an author to write big Issue Books that are like Afterschool Specials or anything. I just kind of read a dismissiveness in the tone of the blog that I'm still mulling over ( ... )
