You're hurting my head again, SF/F

I imagine some kind of buzz is getting started concerning just how much FAIL is inherent in Patricia Wrede's new novel The Thirteenth Child in which she decides to retell the history of the Americas by erasing the people who were here long before Europeans decided to come. Well, you know, maybe we didn't show up in the books she read... you know, history books and such...

Looks like we don't need speculative fiction to already be an alternate history.

Right! I never had arguments with kids from the neighborhood who descended from Haitian, Cambodian, Vietnamese, or Samoan immigrants about whether Wolverine could beat the Hulk.

We totally never thought about how both the Mutant Massacre and The Dark Crystal reflected fantasy versions of the horror our histories.

There was never a flood of multiplatinum POC musicians on mainstream radio in the late 80's - early 90's who not only dropped Star Wars, Trek and comic book references left and right, but even went as far as taking on stage names to reflect that.

And certainly, my friends with more history than myself NEVER had a set of books where the protagonist on the cover didn't reflect the person described inside. (And Leguin never got letters from fans thanking her for POC characters, never).

Nope, not us. People of color just lack the... intellect and imagination to envision things that aren't in front of them. You can tell from our dry mythologies and lack of creativity!

If you got faults, defects or shortcomings,
You know, like arthritis, rheumatism or migraines,
Whatever part of your body it is,
I want you to lay it on your radio, let the vibes flow through.
Funk not only moves, it can re-move, dig?
