a small world
chapter eight

"I'm home!" I shouted, agitated, in English.

"Welcome home!"

My head shot up. My brother's English was heavily accented and Twin's... Twin's was just terrible.

I kicked off my Converse as quickly as I could and almost crashed into the kitchen. I stumbled to regain myself. I awkwardly straightened myself up when I was greeted by two, rather good looking, men. Well, not 'men', since they were probably my brother's age and I never considered him a 'man'.

"Hello, there," one of them greeted in beautiful English, most likely the one who also welcomed me home.

"Oh! You're Chiharu, Hikaru's sister, right?" The other one asked in Japanese. He grinned (kind of like Hikaru but not quite).

I stared at the one sipping coffee or tea from a mug. I first noticed his suit jacket neatly fallen over on his arm then I looked at the wrinkle-free dress shirt and pants and silver tie. I was surprised when I realized his out-of-the-bed hair because it somehow looked in place with the formal outfit.

Then my eyes wandered over to the (may I say) super cute, teenage-looking dude. I said dude because I was starting to have doubts whether he was a 'man'.

"Right?"

With my little examination I didn't realize the short dude had come closer. I came back just as he was about to flick my forehead and, surprisingly, dodged out of the way.

"Uh, yeah," I answered absent-mindedly, finding pride in my own sudden reflexes. "I'm Chiharu." I took a moment to come back once again. "Oh! Yeah, uh, yes, I'm Kieko Chiharu. Nice to meet you two." I bowed. "I presume you are the professor Kei-nii-san was talking about this morning? Welcome," I forced out my most British and formal English. I faced the other boy. "You must be a friend of Hikaru-nii-san's, nice to meet you."

"You have a very respectful and impressive sister." He wasn't talking to me anymore.

I spun on my heel to find both my brothers standing at the doorway behind me.

"I can't believe she's only 14, Hika. You look younger than her."

I ignored the comment and hugged Kei as Twin went over to chat with his friend. "How was school?" He asked me.

"I'll tell you later, I need to go upstairs." I turned to the three other people. "Excusing myself. Please enjoy your stay." But they were probably going to leave soon anyways.

Once in the privacy of my bedroom, after shutting the door behind me, I threw my bag across the room. I slid down to the floor, like you see in those angsty dramas. I wasn't going to cry though, and hug my knees like I was acting in one myself. But I did press my back against the door a little harder just to confirm it was closed.

My hand found itself into my sweater pocket. I felt the edge of my phone and gripped it with a little anxiety. Reluctantly, I tugged it out and slid it on.

"Hey, Chi--"

"Sorry." I interrupted my friend. I had to do it in one go or else I'd find myself a distraction. "Sorry, okay?" I smiled apologetically, knowing he'd be able to see it.

You can't stay mad at Keito. Not just me but everyone and anyone. It's something the boy can do, make you feel guilty, and eventually go asking for forgiveness. He does it unconsciously of course but none the less it's still very irritating. Maybe it irks just me, since I hate to admit wrong. But I can't hold a grudge or anything like that against my best friend. The longest I've gone is probably a week of giving him the silent treatment.

"I didn't mean to get all in your business like that. Sorry for ruining the moment by the way. Oh, and for making such a big deal of things."

"Chiharu, let me explain." I did. "Who I was with, that was a guy."

I was in awe for a bit. I thought I had gone through enough training to tell pretty boys from girls but I guessed not. I didn't make such a big deal of messing up the genders and just 'mm'ed. I found myself a thread on my sweater to play with.

"His name's Ryosuke Yamada." I nodded, forgetting we were on the phone for a sec, tugging and trying to rid the thread. The name was familiar and I relived the start of my day again, with Ryutaro. He had sat with me at lunch, I guess out of pity since I was surrounded by no one, and pointed the student out. Hey, from far away this Ryosuke dude looked like a dude. Who knew he'd be so pretty up close.

"Oh." I said nonchalantly, pulling with strength on the thread.

I heard Keito take a deep breath or two. "He's sort of my boyfriend."

I snapped the string.
