I'm amazed I wrote this entire entry without swearing.

You know what makes a great setting for an 80K+ plus fic about two guys getting it on?

Haiti, post-earthquake!

In the author's own words:

When I signed up for Big Bang back in January, I had a completely different story in mind. An SPN gen story, in fact. That idea languished inside my head for a few weeks until I finally gave up trying to ( Read more... )

Ugh ugh ugh, that is so gross.

This reminds me why I will never get into Helitalia also, because people request fics based around wars and tragedys amd massacres, but it's ok because it's totally kawaaai! >:(

People really surprise me on how much they can suck.

I think it's important that people do write about tragedy. I don't think it's right to take any one thing and say, no, we must never speak of this, because it is too terrible. The main thing that comes to mind here is stories about war. (Eg: Animorphs, Harry Potter) BUT. I think it is completely horrendous for anyone to use a serious topic like that and use is as a backdrop for a fluff piece. (Though I think this probably happens more with noncon than large-scale disasters.) If you are going to write about a tragedy, focus on the tragedy, do not use it as a mere device. If you're going to write about war, write about how it's atrocious but sometimes necessary to defend but still a completely horrible thing. It makes me ill to see terrible things thrown around so lightly, when it's not even for the sake of... I don't know, even satire at the very least.

I agree completely. I was at a book launch the other day and the author was asked whether he worried about children reading his books, which had violent scenes in it. He said that he only worried about violence when it was handled lightly, with the characters just carrying on and not being changed by it - and in his books violence and tragedy were shown to have effects on the people involved, so they can't just be glossed over by the reader.

My dad just died and am just now back from his funeral. I am constructing a post anyway because it pisses me off that much.

As for race/culture fail, yeah. American wank. How the use of American just for USAMericans erases all the other Americans. It wasn't fun but there were many amazing women who said a lot of great stuff.
