Mesmerised (CiC, Jayne/Kelly).

May 09, 2007 02:53

I started playing catch up for femslash100's remainder #100, but didn't get any of them posted before it ended. I've been writing for challenges I've missed since then, on and off, so I figured I might as well post some of them here.

Title: Mesmerised.
Fandom: Commander In Chief.
Pairing: Jayne/Kelly (-ish).
Author Note: For #75 (cigarettes) and #100 (remainder). 250 words.

--

Jayne fake-smokes better than you do, you think, as you watch her blow perfect smoke rings into the night sky. They blend and blur against a backdrop of navy-black darkness, before dissipating in the same gentle breeze that ruffles your hair.

You watch, mesmerised, until the last faint traces have faded away and then look at Jayne, who's staring at nothing in particular with an unreadable expression on her face, the cigarette forgotten as it burns a path towards her fingers.

"I thought you quit," you say, for lack of anything else. "Smoking, I mean."

"I'm making an exception," she says, tossing the cigarette to the ground so she crush it with the heel of her shoe. "Busy week."

"Thanks to your boss," you fire back, defensive despite her casual tone.

"Don't tell me yours can't handle it," Jayne says, amused.

"President Allen can handle it," you say, meeting her probing glance head on. "Templeton can do whatever he wants - she's still going to win."

"You have an alarming amount of faith in her," Jayne murmurs, straightening from her slouched position against the wall to move closer. "But then that's always been your problem."

It isn't a problem. It's your life, your choice and your political path, and while you still believe in the values you're affiliated with, it's the one thing you won't compromise on.

"I can live with it," you shrug.

"I hope that's true, Kel," she says quietly, turning to walk away. "I really do."
