Emmeline said nothing for what seemed like an eternity.

“My family would not approve.” Her head was tilted upwards just so. She was nearly looking down at him. She seemed so untouchable.

“They’d get used to me Emily.”

“No, Sturgis- it’s-“

“-illogical, I know.” He forced a deep breath. “Am I not good enough for you Emily?” It was a question that had kept him awake for nights on end, and he had to know her answer. Her silence said it all. Stately Emmeline had an image to up hold and her beau Sturgis was a mar. Sturgis turned from her with tears stinging his eyes. He didn’t know what to do. He was hurt and angry- he felt broken. “Have you ever loved me?” his voice cracked and the words came out rough- but it was an honest question. Again, she answered in silence. “This can’t be over Emily, I need you…” After another excruciatingly long silence Sturgis hear the rustle of her robes as she walked away. He was brought to tears, feeling that every step she took she ripped his heart out more and more.

In the days that followed he grew angry. It had occurred to him that he’d never really been loved at all. His mother was gone, his father was abusive, and now Emily… He wanted to push Emmeline off her perfect pedestal. Whether she liked it or not he know her better than anyone- he knew her soul. He knew her deepest thoughts, and her childhood dreams. He knew she was more than met the eye. He knew what she looked like with her guard down. He knew what she looked like when she came, when her perfect curls clung to her moist forehead. He knew she wasn’t telling him everything.

After a week of not talking to her he couldn’t handle it. He found her at “their” table in the library studying away. He promptly shut her book and forced her to look at him. “Tell me the truth. Why did you pull away? Why did you say ‘no’?”

“I am already engaged Sturgis.” Her eyes met his with startling honesty. The words hit him like a ton of bricks. His beautiful Emily. His Emily, engaged. He sat down dumb-founded.

“Who? When? … Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I didn’t want to hurt you.” Her voice was small, unusually tender, and understanding.

“Why Emmeline?” He felt lost. He wanted her to hold him and tell him it was simply a bad dream, to feel her long fingers combing through his thick mane.

“It’s the way it happens in Pureblood families. We make sure to marry pure by using arranged marriages. My parents owl’d me little over a month ago to inform me.” She paused. He knew now why he had felt her pulling away. It was to lessen the blow when she broke it off… “His name is Thomas Vance. We are to be married in August.”

Tears dripped from his lashes to the table below. “Can’t you tell them no?”

“Sturgis.” Her hand reached out and brushed the tears away. “This is how it ends…”
