“It’s getting so strong. I never expected it to be this way.” Bill stood in the doorway of the entrance to Grimauld Place where Remus had been living since Sirius’ death.
Looking at the younger man, Remus could see that Bill was shaking slightly and that his blue eyes were darting around anxiously. It was two days to the full moon and it was becoming more and more apparent that the night after the next would change Bill’s life forever.
“What happened?” Remus asked, his countenance calm, his voice friendly.
Too many broken promises in her fragile life
Too many secret thoughts she tried to hide that night
“I promised I wouldn’t hurt her.” Bill said with despair, burying his face in his hands as he sat down on the worn out sofa in the living room, his long red hair hanging down like a curtain.
He never pulled it back in a pony tail anymore. Not since the terrible scars marred his features.
Remus placed a cup of tea in Bill’s hands and sat down next to him.
“What happened.” He asked, silently dreading the answer. A werewolf’s temper could get out of hand easily with the transformation near.
“We fought.” Bill sighed. “I didn’t hurt her… I got a little rough, maybe, but I swear I didn’t harm her, only scared her.” He asserted, blue eyes pleading with Remus to believe him.
The older werewolf nodded. “I believe you.” He said, placing a hand on Bill’s shoulder for reassurance.
“I promised her not to hurt her. Not like so many other people did.” The redhead whispered, closing his eyes momentarily, trying to block out the guilt.
“What was the fight about?” Remus asked tentatively, trying to find out the reason for Bill’s loss of control.
“I couldn’t take it anymore.” Bill said. “Every morning she tells me she loves me. Every night she’s so close to me. She’s trying really hard. But I can always see the underlying pity in her eyes, as much as she tries to hide it.”
So hard she tried to escape
But the pain was everywhere
“She tries so hard to accept my condition, but I see it hurts her just as much as it hurts me.
I can feel it radiating off her every time she professes her love to me. It’s sincere, but not… pure. Not as it used to be.”
“I am sure she still loves you as much as she did before.” Remus tried to console Bill. “You both need time to readjust.”
“I don’t think we have this time” Bill said, in despair.
No, take this pain away
Even for one day
She cried on her own grave
“You didn’t see her, Remus.” Bill’s voice became frantic once more. “The fear in her eyes when I had her cornered, the disbelief when I tried to apologise.” Bill ran a hand through his long red tresses and met Remus’ eyes with a hopeless empty stare.
“She was so scared. So fragile all of a sudden.” he trailed off.
Please, demons set me free
My heart has started to bleed
I have become the queen misery
And it seems to last forever
Remus looked at Bill sympathetically and was met by a momentarily angry stare.
“You’re not supposed to pity me, Remus.” Bill growled.
The older man nodded and apologised, unaffected by the other’s sudden anger.
Bill sighed and took a sip of his tea, ending up staring into the amber liquid.
“I’m infecting her with my pain.” He said after a long pause filled with only the ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner.
“Since the… since that night, neither of us have had single truly happy day. I’m tearing her down.” Bill concluded sadly.
She tried to reach to the stars all her life
But her mind fell apart every time
“I don’t know what to do anymore.” he admitted, leaning back on the couch, defeated. “I’m losing her, Remus.” Bill said, looking to the older man for any kind of advice, althought on which he had given up already, the moment it had crossed his mind.
Remus covered Bill’s hand in response and gave it a reassuring squeeze. “Give her time to accept your change. You won’t lose her. Only if you give up.” Remus tried to help.
Bill only nodded half-heartedly.
“It’s late.” Remus said, turning to look at the clock. “Do you want to stay here ‘til after the full moon?” he asked Bill with a warm smile.
The younger werewolf smiled back slightly and nodded.
“I’ll go and get a bed fixed up then.” The older man said and left the room.
Bill sat on the couch for some time longer, letting the recent events replay in his mind.
Fleur was his star, the light in his darkness and it was already beginning to fade.
He was tearing her down with his condition, his anger and helplessness and he could see that she was struggling to cope with the situation.
“But she deserves so much better…” Bill mumbled, seconds before Remus came back to inform him that the bed had been made.
