She was sick with worry. Nightly, she lay awake wondering if she’d made a mistake. Sturgis was her best mate and a great lover. But logically she knew he couldn’t support them and cutting herself off from her family would be unwise. Besides, Thomas is nice…
During lessons he’d chosen to relocate his sear and he avoided her gaze in the Great Hall. Her dorm-mates would try to comfort her by reminding her she didn’t love him. But Emmeline had gotten a taste of the Gryffindor heart and it was challenging her black and white Ravenclaw mind.
Things were just as hard on Sturgis He was ill with grief and knew no other way than to avoid her. He found his feet carried him to the gardens often but his wonderful memories were marred by the future. It had been two weeks what the two met here, quite on accident.
"You look sick." She sounded concerned but it cut him like a knife.
I am sick he thought I’ve got a disease- love. It’s like a cancer. But it was his turn for silence. He looked deep into her eyes, memorizing the green flecks as though he’d never see her again. The, coolly, he walked past her towards the exit- it was his turn to leave. Yet as he passed, her sweet smell filled his head and her hand slipped into his. The warmth from her skin set him on fire. The gesture forced him to stop, be he wouldn’t look at her. "No one has ever denied you have they Emmeline?" The use of her full name made her flinch.
"Sturgis, can’t we still be friends?"
"No. I can’t handle not having you. I love-d you Emmeline, don’t you understand that? Now I feel like I have a disease coursing through me. I feel like-I can’t live without you- what am I supposed to do about that Emmeline?" He pulled his hand fro hers and looked at her, "Just leave me alone while my world falls apart." He continued walking, trying not to cry. He couldn’t see his Emily’s tears. "Goodbye Emmeline Vance."
