In the dark he’ll be.
Abandoned to his nightmares, the last fading memory of her skin both his detriment and last anchor to some kind of sanity. It is a small room; he has not gone inside but he has passed it, the nightmares of its past residents shivering along his skin in sympathetic terror.
This is his last and true hell, the demon so much greater than what lives inside him. His demon has torn lines in her flesh and loved her for it, and this demon will break her heart. He cannot stand to look in her eyes some days, remembering the numb pain when he’d thrown his pain and fate at her feet, daring her to go on caring. He’d realized then that she’d known, always known, and almost cursed her for being such goddamn perfection.
Fear will eat him alive in the dark, but what hurts most is the thought of her anguish when he’s there forever.
