Leon stood frozen by the door. D’s petshop was even more crazy than usual. There were animals running around everywhere, sweets dropping from their claws. Assorted cakes lay dusted all over the room, though the count was studiously picking them up.
“Ah, Detective. How good to see you.” The voice of the Chinese man was honeyed as he continued with his task. Leon observed the scene in mild amusement.

Rabbits and cats were jumping all over the place, bouncing off walls, crashing into furniture. Two dogs had managed to get entwined in a ball of string and a turtle was breakdancing. A canary was swinging from the chandelier, teasing the large snake crooning to the lamp. Chris was sitting in the center of the sugar chaos, icing smeared on one cheek and a paw print on his forehead. He was laughing at the entertaining performances of the creatures surrounding him.

“Aw, hell no.” Leon had arrived to pick up his brother, but seeing the sugar-encrusted, hyper little boy he was going to have to deal with perplexed him. As if sensing his irritation, the raccoon and goat-thing piled onto Chris, followed by a hoard of similarly out of control animals. Knocked over and being licked only increased the manic giggling from the boy.

“You know what, D. You caused this, so you can keep him.” The count was instantly by his side, glaring at him for such an idea.
“He’s your brother. You’re supposed take care of him, bond with him.”
“Nah, this time he’s yours. I don’t want to have to deal with the sore tummy in the morning. Why’d you leave so many cakes lying around anyway?”
The count was silent, pondering that question himself.

Coming up with no real conclusion, he sighed, surveying the damage. Some of the creatures were fading fast, their energy sapped. Others were licking traces of their drug from anywhere they could find it, hoping to prolong the dizzy feeling. Taking that drug himself, enjoying the sweet taste, he offered a plate to the man beside him.
“Cake, Detective?”
“If you can’t beat them, join them, I guess.” He supplied unhelpfully as he took a dainty morsel. D hoped he wouldn’t have to deal with the man drunk on sugar as well, but he was almost certain the detective would control himself. Taking a seat, Leon shook his head at the chaotic animals and wondered why the count had allowed this to happen. Ah well. He settled in for the night, laughing as the count returned to clearing up sticky carpet.
