Casey slowly opened her eyes and looked at Jason, who was watching her sleep from the other side of the counter.
“Morning, sunshine,” he said as she pealed her face from the sticky counter top.
She rubbed her cheek. “Ever heard of cleaning your counter?” She looked at his coat, which had fallen to the floor as she sat up. “Where’d that come from?”
He looked at her. “Well, if I had known you were planning to make out with my counter instead of your pillow last night, I would have cleaned it. And you looked cold.”
“I had to give you your trophy back. I was waiting for you and then I kinda passed out.”
He handed her a cup of coffee. “Yeah, how’d you get that back anyhow?”
She took a sip of the coffee without thinking about it, then spit it back into the cup. “Sergeant Shaw believed me when I cried.” She sat up straight, stretching out her back. “I gotta get home.”
“Stay,” he told her.
She looked at him. “A dog command, really?”
He sighed. “No. I mean, stay here. You’re too tired to drive.”
“I don’t feel like crashing on the counter again.”
“Yeah, I know. You can sleep in my bed. You can even make out with my pillow if it’ll make you happy.”
