“When can I leave?” Casey asked, looking over at her partner. She was lying in a hospital bed, her right leg wrapped in bandages from the knee up.
“Soon,” Jason promised her, her torn pants folded in his lap. “Your doctor just needs to get you some pain meds.”
“I don’t need medication, I feel fine.”
“Because of the morphine,” he told her. “Trust me, you’ll need it.”
She rolled her eyes. “I can’t believe you shot me.”
He looked at her. “I didn’t mean to. You’re the one who ran in front of me.”
“So what? You didn’t have to shoot me in the ass.”
“Technically, I shot you below the ass.” He leaned down to remove his shoe and sock, then propped his bare foot on her bed.
She looked at the large scar below his big toe. “You got shot in the foot?”
He nodded slightly. “I shot myself, actually. It was my third month on Second Squad and there was a bank robbery. We went in, the guy pointed his gun at me and I got so freaked, I shot myself.”
She raised her eyebrows. “And that’s supposed to make me feel better? All I know now is that I have a partner who’s trigger happy.”
